al_nbd writes "Story here. Excerpt:
"The number of Swedish men who believe they have been discriminated on the basis of their gender has increased dramatically, according to the equality ombudsman's office, Jämo.
On July 1st last year an amendment was made to the law against discrimination, specifically banning gender discrimination. This has led to a rapid rise in the number of incidents reported by men, who were previously under-represented.
Of 56 cases reported under the new amendment, 45 concerned complaints made by men. Added to a series of complaints under the previous legislation, Jämo is now handling a total of 82 incidents reported by men in 2005, compared to just 23 the year before."
Will the complaints of those men be handled with the same attidude as women's ones? I think discrimination against men will be justified by law soon."

Dittohd writes "If this isn't the ultimate in chutzpuh! The guy is sent to prison unjustly for 13 years, child support continues to accrue plus interest and penalties, and they blame it on him as though it would have been possible to have the child support suspended. Neither women nor the government are ever at fault, no matter what!"

Anonymous User writes "Story here. This is about a proposal for a bill that would make laws banning "female genital mutilation" gender neutral is circulating through congress and fifteen state legislatures. The proposal, and the group advocating it, claims infantile circumcision is mutilation and sexual assault done without a child's consent. As a Jewish man and a man opposed to circumcision I have much interest in this topic. I'm curious as to whether there would have to be first amendment exceptions provided for Jews (and perhaps Muslims) for religious freedom purposes."

All,
Some of you have mentioned in posted comments or by e-mail to MANN admins that you have had problems submitting comments or new stories successfully to MANN.
The problem some are getting is this: After typing in a comment or a story for submission, the user clicks "Post" (or whatever the submission button reads) and after a few seconds, a standard "Unable to display page" error comes up. Frustrating though this is it does not mean the text you have typed is lost! The thing to do when this happens is to click the 'Refresh' button on your web browser. [For the major browsers, this is the third or fourth button from the left at the top of the browser, and looks like two arrows pointing at each other.] You will then get a message saying you are re-posting this data and are you sure you want to? Click "Yes" or "OK", whichever is the affirmative response in the dialog box for your browser. The post should complete OK on the second attempt but if it doesn't, click 'Refresh' to try again.
I have had this problem myself occasionally and this always works to make sure my typing hasn't been for naught.

Clancy writes "This is from a military BLOG called "The Mudville Gazette". I found it a good read. It's a story that I have not heard about. Perhaps some of you guys have. Unfortunately, it is unabashedly tiltted to the right which will likely offend many members of this group. Nevertheless, it puts the spotlight on victim feminism in action within our military."

Dittohd writes "Looks like China has the right idea. $3100 is not all that much but I suppose it's worth a bit more to them assuming their cost of living is lower over there. I wonder how much it would be if we equalized theirs and our two countries' costs of living."

This made it to the legendary spate of Superbowl advertisements yesterday during Superbowl XL. While most of the advertising, if not all of it, was otherwise touting consumer products such as beer, cars, and skin care lotion (with the usual dose of men getting beat on, made out to look like fools or whatever, etc.), the makers of Dove cleansers managed to tout their latest save-the-girls P/R campaign and to solicit donations for it. [I read that Superbowl ad time this year was $33,000/second - it strikes me they could have used that money instead for their own cause rather than using it to try to get TV viewers to fork over the cash!]

Return of the King writes "Link here. Excerpt:
IN THE EARLY 1990s, talk about girls as an endangered species was everywhere. There were studies purporting to show that patriarchy-damaged girls suffered a disastrous drop in self-esteem in adolescence. The American Association of University Women published a report titled ''How Schools Shortchange Girls," which landed on the front pages of many newspapers. Educators and legislators alike rushed to tackle the problem of gender bias that was allegedly keeping girls from reaching their full potential -- despite the fact that, by then, girls were already graduating from America's colleges in higher numbers than boys.'
What will be done for the boys?"

Martian Bachelor writes "In the light of Betty F.'s recent death, and all the subsequent reports about how much women's lives have changed, I thought this was a bit of a reality check...
From "Divorce settlements: B.A.C.K.L.A.S.H."
'The lawyer responsible for one of Britain's most influential divorce settlements has told The Independent on Sunday she 'would not blame men' for deciding not to marry if a divorce settlement before the House of Lords is not overturned.'"

C-Span2 BookTV had an interview this evening with Kate O'Beirne, author of "Women Who Make the World Worse." It will be replayed tomorrow at 6 and 9 PM. (Apparently that's Eastern Standard Time.) She did a fine job.

Dittohd writes "Is this more funny than sad or more sad than funny? I don't know whether to feel sorry for the guy or to laugh. And I thought men were king in Arab countries. If women are victims and men are victims, who's in charge? If the mother can force this guy to marry against his will twice, just like the father, how victimized are Arab women, really?"
