Rape rumour sparked attack, teen boy set on fire

bandersnatch writes "From Nine MSN, A teenager was doused with kerosene and set alight in a "vigilante" attack sparked by false rumours he was a rapist, a Melbourne court was told. Prosecutor Gavin Silbert told the County Court there was an unsubstantiated rumour circulating amongst a group of teens who congregated at Greensborough Plaza that 19-year-old James Merrett had raped a girl and cheated on his girlfriend. The girlfriend then made it known she wanted retribution, telling one man: "He's gotta be bashed. He cheated on me." -- Wow, she sounds like our superhero ex-girlfriend."

Elder Abuse & Men's Rights Issues

Anonymous User writes "Today (15th June), the First Elder Abuse Awareness Day is being observed. I think this is related to men's rights because it clearly shows that DV is NOT a gender issue. Here (.pdf file) is a World Health Organization fact sheet (prepared in 2002) which clearly states 'elder men are at risk of abuse in about the same proportion as elder women'."

Anti-Husband Cadillac SUV Commercial

mens_issues writes "I was watching the news this afternoon, when a commercial for the Cadillac SRX Crossover came on. It showed a few women returning from a vacation together. One of them commented on how nice it was to have a vacation with 'No stress,' and then all of them said 'No husband!' in unison. As they got out of their SUV in an upper middle class residential neighborhood, one of them then said 'Back to reality!'"

National Post Stands Up for Men

AFG writes "Canada's National Post, one of the country's largest daily newspapers, has devoted an entire page to men's rights in its 'Issues & Ideas' editorial section. One article, by Barbera Kay, is called Welcome to the Matriarchy; the other, by Prof. Don Dutton (author of Rethinking Domestic Violence) is called Domestic Violence isn't One-sided. These articles appear under the header 'Stacking the Deck Against Men.'

Note: The Post has featured many anti-feminist editorials in the past, and next week, Barbara Kay will continue the assault by writing about a family court system that exiles 'disenfranchised fathers to a Kafkaesque non-custodial limbo.'"

Ed. note: Paid registration is required to read most of the content.

Drive to bring down male suicides

AngryMan writes "Suicide is the most common cause of death among men under 35. If we are all basking in our Patriarchal power, why are so many of us killing ourselves?"

Ed. note: The AFSP holds suicide prevention walk-a-thons that are done at night. These walk-a-thons however require a minimum of $1000 in pledges from sponsors for each walker and an entrance fee, sort of like the AIDS rides that were in the news a lot last year (there was big controversy too over the very high percentage of the amount raised going to "overhead costs"). I don't know anything about AFSP or how well they use their donations; I am just mentioning that it exists and there does seem to be a national awareness campaign, at least here in the U.S., regarding suicide-- though it doesn't seem to be too well-known nor mention particularly the fact of the much-higher percentage of males who commit suicide.

Does marriage matter to the nuturing of children?

Family Court Judge Shot in Reno

Anonymous User writes "A family court judge was shot in Reno yesterday. Judge Chuck Weller was shot through a window in his office at the Mills B. Lane Justice Center. He was wounded in the chest and taken to the local hospital in serious condition. He has survived, so far. Who wants to bet this was the result of yet another father who was railroaded by the family court system? When the police do catch the suspect involved my guess his biography will be one all too familiar fathers rights advocates."

Ed. note: Looks like indeed that may be the case; the main suspect fits that description. Follow-up is here.

Where is Masculinity Headed?

Dave in CA writes "Where are men (our behaviors, beliefs, etc.) headed? Read this recent article and decide for yourself. Excerpt:

'We are now witnessing the corruption of the masculine ideal into absolute violence and amorality. This phenomenon has developed over time, as manhood and the role of men in the home and in the society have been undermined by social, legal, economic, and ideological forces.

'We now know that boys are doing more poorly in school than girls and that young women now outnumber young men on college campuses. The vast majority of violent crimes are committed by young men, and young males drive the statistics in virtually every form of antisocial behavior. The absence of strong male role models for boys and young men to respect and emulate — especially fathers — is surely the largest contributing factor to the rise in the social pathologies and antisocial behaviors.'"

Divorcing Couple Warring Over Son's Circumcision

Roy writes "In a really extreme case of how ugly a divorce litigation can get, check out this article describing how a divorcing couple are using the threat of circumcizing their 8 year-old son’s penis as part of the psychotic Family Court warfare. The mom’s lawyer (female) wants the foreskin badly. The dad’s lawyers (female and male) want it preserved. This kid must be about ready to become a runaway ...
See Dad sues to block son's circumcision."
