Sen. Clinton Openly Plays 'Gender Card'

Story here. Excerpt:

"WASHINGTON — Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton called Tuesday for the majority of voters — women — to help her break the nation's highest glass ceiling by electing her the first female president.

'Today, women are a majority of the voters, a majority of students in college...'
...
The senator from New York is part of a generation of women who broke the so-called "glass ceiling" of advancement for females in the workplace, but she said the current government should do more to ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work."

Sacks & Leving: Scott Peterson in a Space Suit

First appeared in the Philadelphia Daily News, this by Sacks and Leving. Excerpt:

'Lisa Nowak is receiving widespread sympathy, in part because she is legitimately admired for being an astronaut. But a large share accrues because she’s a woman, and our society—both men and women—views women’s misdeeds more sympathetically than men’s.

The media is soft-pedaling numerous aspects of the Nowak case. Practically every media outlet has explained Nowak's decision to wear astronaut diapers on her journey to allegedly attack romantic rival Colleen Shipman as a bizarre, freakish action indicative of her mental instability. In reality, Nowak acted with logic and calculation—she did not want to stop several times on the way from Houston to Orlando and leave a trail of convenience store camera records behind her. For the same reason, when Nowak arrived in Orlando she disguised herself, checked into a hotel under a fake name and address, and paid cash.'

Baby does best with dad off work, study finds

Story here.

'Children are more likely to suffer development problems if their fathers do not take paternity leave or spend enough time with them when they are very young, according to an analysis of thousands of babies born around the turn of the millennium.

A report published today by the Equal Opportunities Commission and based on research tracking 19,000 children born in 2000 and 2001 found emotional and behavioural problems were more common by the time youngsters reached the age of three if their fathers had not taken time off work when they were born, or had not used flexible working to have a more positive role in their upbringing.'

Australia: Another baby boy thrown away - all 'concerned' about the mother

This story on News.com.au is a classic. Woman dumps a baby in a public toilet, in a plastic shopping bag. But, of course, police hold 'grave concerns for the mother's wellbeing, fearing that she may be suffering emotionally'. Poor thing. And of course should a father ever dump his baby in a toilet, he'd be lovingly looked after. Right.....

Sacks & Leving: Utah Bill to Punish ‘Deadbeat Dads’ Is Based on False Assumptions

Article here. Excerpt:

"While fathers are usually blamed for divorce’s negative economic impact on children, what’s often overlooked is the simple fact that the income that once supported one household cannot support two at the same level, no matter how many punitive measures the government employs or how much fathers pay. Those who insist that the average child’s standard of living will not or should not decline after a divorce are kidding themselves."

RADAR ALERT: VAWA, I-VAWA, and CEDAW: Why Men Now Fear Marriage

Misery Loves Company - Have A Piece Of VAWA/I-VAWA Pie

In 1996 Congress found "Marriage is the foundation of a successful society." In 2005 the Deficit Reduction Act provided $150 million a year for healthy marriage promotion and fatherhood. So why was the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) extended in 2006, when it directly affects the stability of marriages and relationships between fathers and children in America? (http://mediaradar.org/docs/VAWA-Threat-to-Families.pdf)

The way VAWA is written, a woman can report that she's in fear, and with just her word she can get a temporary restraining order and emergency child custody order. Every day innocent fathers visit their children in jail-like supervised visitation centers and are forced into anger management classes, sometimes for years. Teri Stoddard Essay: "Can't Find a Husband?"

Essay by Teri Stoddard here. Excerpt:

'I have bad news for the ladies out there looking for a husband. Today's men are afraid of marriage and having kids. This is most likely because their male friends and relatives have told them what usually happens in the event of a divorce with children. In fact, some men are calling for a marriage strike.
...
If we want men to embrace the idea of family life, we need to ensure they have equality in family law. Equal parenting laws, favored by 85% of people polled, need to be passed nationwide and a Federal Family Rights Act needs to be established immediately to protect families dealing with Child Protective Services and parents in divorce and child custody cases. The time has come to restore human and civil rights to all fit parents.'

India Knight: 'Mugged by a toxic wife'

Essay here. Excerpt:

'Unfortunately I’ve begun to notice that over the past few years the situation has become rather complicated, thanks to the appearance of a whole new breed of woman: one who marries for money, spends her marriage spending money, aggressively takes her husband to the cleaners in a divorce and, having secured X million pounds, moves on to the next hapless sap having a midlife crisis (he sweetly believes that it’s his double chin that’s reeled her in) and starts the pattern all over again."

Erectile dysfunction drugs may protect against heart attacks

In fairness, the drugs for the most part were originally intended to treat heart conditions, but that's not exactly what they've become most well known for...

Article here. Excerpt:

"Erectile dysfunction drugs may be better than nitroglycerin in protecting the heart from damage before and after a severe heart attack, Virginia Commonwealth University researchers report today.

During a heart attack, the heart is deprived of oxygen, which can result in significant damage to heart muscle and tissue. After the attack, most patients require treatment to reduce and repair the damage and improve their chances of survival. With the exception of early reperfusion, there are no available therapies that are truly effective in protecting or repairing such damage clinically."

DV Expert Interview Available On-line

From Marc A.:

Springer Publications, a major publisher of public health materials, just posted an interview of the honest domestic violence expert John Hamel, author/editor of "Gender Inclusive Treatment of Intimate Partner Abuse," on gender-inclusive treatment and female violence. Excerpt:

-->Both of your books are based on the concept that men and women are equally capable of abuse against each other. This runs completely counter to conventional thinking, which insists that men are always aggressors and women are always victims. What first led you to this line of research, and what prompted you to begin writing about it?<--

In 1991, I took over a domestic violence caseload and was trained in a variation of the well-known “Duluth” model. In the Duluth theoretical framework, domestic violence is caused by a patriarchal society that sanctions violence by men against their female partners. Women are assumed to be either victims or, when they are found to aggress against their male partners, to be doing so in self-defense.
