Toronto father takes daughter for a walk.
Cops called, 4-hour manhunt ensues... excerpt:
"It's a classic case of how looks can truly be deceiving. After a frantic four hour-plus search through a heavily wooded area, police at last have an answer in a case that paralyzed part of the downtown core late Thursday. A young girl they believed had been abducted was found safe, sound and never in any real danger.
...
It was the finale many expected would come to pass because police never received any calls about a missing child, something that most certainly would have happened had a little girl been gone for that long.
In the end, it was a complete and expensive overreaction, but one that cops couldn't afford not to take."

'MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - John Daly told authorities his wife tried stab him with a steak knife, and the golfer had red marks on his cheeks when he showed up to play Friday on the course where he lives.
Daly called police about 6 a.m. on Friday, Shelby County Sheriff's department spokesman Steve Shular said. When deputies arrived, wife Sherrie and the couple's children were not there. Deputies could not find the knife he claimed she used.
...
He did not speak with reporters, but issued a statement saying he was the "victim of an assault by my wife."
"I filed a complaint with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. They are investigating, and I'll have no further comment on the matter while they pursue their investigation. My only concern at this point is for the safety of my children and myself," the statement said.'

"A woman who killed her preacher husband with a shotgun blast to the back as he lay in bed was sentenced Friday to three years in prison, but she may end up serving only 60 days in a mental hospital.
...
That leaves only two months, and McCraw said up to 60 days of the sentence could be served in a facility where she could receive mental health treatment. That means Winkler may not serve any significant time in prison."

'A bride-to-be who wanted to get out of a date with a man she met on a phone chat line sent officers on a wild chase when she faked her abduction, police said.
Sara White, 20, was charged Wednesday with a misdemeanor charge of abusing emergency dispatch services for telling authorities she had been hit on the head and dragged into the trunk of a car while sitting in a Sacramento park.
White said she concocted the story Monday after changing her mind about meeting the man, with whom she'd been talking on the phone for two weeks.'

This article here talks of a 17 year old receiving consensual oral sex from a 15 year old. Gets 10 years in jail! TEN YEARS! Didn't this website have an article about a woman who beat her kids for 6 years and got 19 months in prison? What the hell is wrong with our judicial system?

Ed. note: This is commentary on a case previously covered here on MANN.

From Glenn Sacks: "My new co-authored column, NY Electronic Tagging Device Bill--An Orwellian Measure (Buffalo News, 5/30/07), criticizes Assembly Bill 5424, which requires “any person against whom an order of protection is issued…to wear an electronic monitoring device.” The article explains that New York Orders of Protection are often issued in an assembly line manner, and this bill will victimize many innocent men."

'Doris Lessing, the novelist and feminist icon, said that women could be warmongers and as violent as men, in a speech yesterday.
Speaking at the Hay on Wye Festival, Lessing, 87, said that although history suggested women were peaceful, some of the worst crimes had been committed by females.
"There is a lot of sentimentality about women. We like to think that women are kind and motherly and are not going to go to war. But it's not true, is it?
"History suggests women are peace loving and law abiding - on the contrary some of the worst crimes have been committed by women," she said.'

"Barely able to see over the witness stand, twin 8-year-old sisters made a Macomb County jury cry Friday as they described the abuse they suffered at the hands of the adoptive mother accused of torturing them.
In sundresses and ponytails, the twin girls testified separately that 30-year-old Tamika Williams beat them with cable wire, shoes and exercise equipment; bathed them in bleach water; burned them with cigarettes; and dunked them in a toilet filled with urine."

Here we ago again. "Sex with an 11 year old". The word rape is reserved for male sex offenders. Women? They simply had "sex". Doesn't his age suggest she is a pedophile? The age might be different in each state. Excerpt:
"Former South Carolina elementary school teacher entered a guilty plea to having sex with an 11-year-old student and was given a 10-year prison sentence. Wendie Ann Schweikert, 37, a former teacher at E.B. Morse Elementary School in Laurens County, refused a plea deal that would have sentenced her to 14 years.
...
Wendie Schweikert was one of two Laurens County teachers arrested within a short time of each other for having sex with students. Allenna Ward, 24, a teacher at Bell Street Middle School was charged with engaging in sexual acts with five boys, ages 14 and 15 years old."

My sincere condolences to the individuals who were eventually killed by another bomber. Thankfully the female suicide bomber was stopped before any other people were hurt or killed. I'm glad to see the US Military and Iraq Army are taking these bombings very seriously. They have identified women are capable horrific acts of violence and should not be ignored. Lives are at stake. Excerpt:
'Alert guards gunned down a black-clad woman at a police recruiting station Tuesday, a would-be suicide bomber who then exploded before their eyes. But another bomber succeeded, killing at least 15 people at a gathering of tribal leaders opposed to al-Qaida in the volatile Anbar province.
Khalaf said a woman clad in a black abaya, the traditional Islamic cloak, approached a group of police recruits in east Baghdad's Canal district about 10 a.m. Tuesday.
"She didn't obey the guards' orders to stop and they shot her and she immediately blew up," Khalaf told the AP.

The case we saw a couple of months back has concluded.
"Two Mormon women who beat children in their care with rolling pins and forced them to eat chilli powder were jailed for 19 months each yesterday.
Maria Keable and Deirdre Carrington forced six children to eat tablespoons of chilli powder and raw eggs for not keeping to a strict regime of chores between 1997 and 2006.
The children – all aged under 16 – were also stung with nettles and punched."
Hello? 19 months? A team of two men doing this would have got 10 years at least. Strangely, the judge seems to think he treated them harshly:
"Judge Nash said the pair's lack of remorse was a factor in sentencing."

The Psychological Today story: The Making of a Modern Dad, by Douglas Carlton Abrams illustrates in vivid, scientific detail how fathers are no different in their biological programming than mothers when raising children. That divorced dads who "feel" a need to be with their children, is not only an emotional reaction but a biological one as well. Article here. Excerpt:
'This evidence hits hard at social workers, family court judges and elected legislators who abide by archaic research and outdated laws which state that it is in the best interest of the child to be with the divorced mother - not the divorced father.
"Here is the first hard evidence that men are biologically prepared for fatherhood," says Psychology Today. "In fact, this is the first evidence that to nurture is part of man's nature."'
