'According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
The NCADV also reports that a staggering 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by a partner each year. Don't be fooled though, domestic violence also includes verbal, emotional, and psychological abuse as well. Whether someone endures constant put downs, verbal threats or mental domination, this is still considered domestic violence.'

'The Iowa Supreme Court on Friday ordered a new trial for a woman convicted of drowning her infant son, whose body was found in a central Iowa lake.
...
Anfinson has been serving a 50-year prison sentence in the 1998 death of her 15-day-old son, Jacob. His body, weighted down with rocks, was found in Saylorville Lake near Des Moines.
Anfinson’s lawyer argued that the baby died accidentally in an infant bathtub and she panicked and hid his body in the lake.
...
In asking the Supreme Court to review her appeal for postconviction relief, Anfinson claims her lawyer dismissed an insanity or diminished capacity defense despite evidence she was suffering from severe postpartum depression at the time of the child’s death.'

'A law introduced in Brazil two years ago to protect women from domestic violence has been used to protect a man who was being abused by his ex-wife.
It is thought this may be the first time the legislation has been used to protect a man.
The case was heard before a judge in Cuiaba in the state of Mato Grosso.
The judge ruled that the former wife had to stay at least 500m away from her ex-husband and must avoid all contact with him.
The man alleged that he was suffering physical aggression, psychological and financial abuse and provided several documents to prove his case.'

'Ingeborg Grubanoski was suffering from a number of mental disorders when she brutally killed her severely disabled husband, a forensic psychiatrist testified Wednesday.
As a result, Dr. David Tano concluded she should be found not criminally responsible for clubbing Mladen Grubanoski in the head with a hammer and strangling him with a belt on May 17, 2007.
Tano told Crown prosecutor Christine Rideout that Ingeborg, 56, heard voices before she retrieved the weapons from the basement of their southwest home after their daughter Karin went to the grocery store.
When she killed the retired electrical engineer, she was in a dissociative or trance-like state, he said.'

'Adoptions are private for a reason -- to protect a child. But, with such secrecy, a lawyer can set up a deal between a mother and adoptive parents and move a baby into a new home very quickly. By the time a birth father catches up, it is often just too late.
For 10 months, Michael Marek's life as a new father has involved endless court dates and a few supervised visits in public places. He is fighting for a baby that is biologically his, but living with an adoptive family that does not want to give her up. Out of respect for their privacy, we will not use their names.
...
Birth fathers like Marek are stuck in a gray area of adoption law. A single mother can put her baby up for adoption, and if the father objects, his only hope is to enter a long and expensive court battle. The state offers men like Marek no protection.'

'In a new study, researchers from the University of Washington explored the recent increase in infidelity, and the changing makeup of the participants. A greater number of older men and younger women have reported being unfaithful than in earlier studies. However, historically, gauging responses in scientific studies of sensitive issues such as sexual behavior has proven to be a flawed science.
According to The New York Times, which cites the University of Washington’s research, the number of young women who report engaging in extramarital sex is not much lower than that of men. The study reports that 20 percent of men and 15 percent of women under the age of 35 have cheated on their spouses, up from 15 percent and 12 percent respectively.'

'"In the best tradition--and reflecting the best practices--of women's hospitals worldwide, we are creating both a hospital and a service line designed and staffed to meet the unique needs and preferences of women," said Ken Graham, El Camino Hospital CEO. "Women, who represent 65% of patients who receive care at El Camino Hospital, have specialized health needs that extend well beyond maternity and related services--the focus of most hospital programs for women. We believe that better tailoring their lifelong care and the environment in which it is delivered will lead to even better outcomes and improved patient experiences."
The hospital is already considered a leader in women's services. It is the only one in Northern California to receive HealthGrades' Women's Health Excellence Award three years in a row, and the only one in the region to be 5-star rated for Women's Health Services.'

"And we need to reform workplace policies that bar men from participating fully in family life. We need paid family leave, we need to enforce equal pay for equal work."'

'BEIJING - A Chinese mother who admitted poisoning and smothering her mentally ill daughter to death has been spared a jail sentence, state media reported Friday.
Li Daohong fed her 20-year-old daughter, who suffered from brain paralysis, more than 200 sleeping pills in a Beijing hotel before smothering her with towels and a quilt while she was asleep, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
The case was a rare public look at the difficulties of caring for the mentally ill in China, a subject that remains taboo in much of the country.
...
"The court is convinced of the fact that the defendant has spent great energy and money on the victim, and the mounting psychological burden proved unbearable for her," the judge said, according to Xinhua.'
