X Versus Y - The Ultimate Battle of the Sexes

Article here. Excerpt:

'The quest to find a man, not a boy, plagues most women today. We women find ourselves sitting and pondering where the elusive man has gone, and why he has been replaced with these obviously cheap knockoffs the same quality of a swap meet Gucci bag.

Well, the pondering is over and our question answered. The cherished Y chromosome is losing its genes from generation to generation. Women can let out that sigh of relief - It's down to genetics. They might not be that into us, but it's because genetically they aren't that into themselves.
...
Every guy should give a hand to that, not because they are saved from disappearance, but because, at their current state, it's the only real loving they should get. So, as the hunt for the real man continues, women can stop settling for some half mutated loser, but comb through looking for that one man who escaped his genetic disposition, and learned a thing or two from his mother.'

Sheriff: Woman Fired on Deputy Assisting Child

Story here. Excerpt:

'LEONARDTOWN, Md. -- A sheriff's deputy who went to a home to perform a welfare check found himself in the line of fire Friday, according to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy made contact with 35-year-old Nancy Martha Ahearn at a Leonardtown residence when he saw an 18-month-old boy pull a bookshelf onto himself, authorities said.

When the deputy went to assist the child, Ahearn went to a closet to get a handgun, according to the sheriff's office. She pointed it at the deputy, who sought cover, and fired.

Ahearn only managed to successfully fire one shot, authorities said, and the deputy was able to disarm her.

Ahearn was taken to St. Mary's Hospital for evaluation. She was charged Wednesday with attempted murder and first-degree assault.'

'A woman whose first murder trial ended up in a hung jury was convicted Monday of killing her husband by the second jury to hear her case.

Grace Pianka, 51, was found guilty of second-degree murder in Maricopa County Superior Court. She faces up to 22 years in prison when she is sentenced May 29.

Pianka was charged in the April 15, 2006, shooting death of her husband, Adam Kostewicz.
Her first trial ended in a hung jury last August.
...
The jurors would not comment on the case, but all affirmed their guilty votes when individually polled after the verdict was read in the courtroom of Judge Warren Granville.

Pianka faced a presumptive prison term of 10 to 16 years for the crime. However, Granville ruled that aggravating circumstances - the fact that a gun was used in the crime - meant that the prison term could be stretched to as much as 22 years.'

Experts: Abuse doesn't just affect women

Article here. Excerpt:

'Many male victims of violence are unwilling to come forward and seek help said Erika Tindill, executive director of the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

The coalition oversees 18 domestic violence programs throughout the state, including The Umbrella and the Center for Women and Families. Tindill said men who are abused by female partners can feel emasculated by the situation.

"We are in a paternalistic society," Tindill said. "We depend on men to be the providers."

Being abused by a wife or girlfriend flies in the face of that macho archetype, she said, and male abuse victims might be unwilling to admit what has happened to them. As a result, Tindill said, female on male violence "is clearly underreported."

Fresno Radical Men's Discussion Night

Announcement here. Excerpt:

'The radical men's discussion night is open to all who identify as men/male. It's an opportunity to discuss sexism, male-ness, feelings and relationships, and of course, revolution.
...
Men benefit from gender privilege and power, and this is something we will discuss: how we men can struggle against sexism. At the same time, sexism hurts us all. How have other men treated us throughout our lives? While patriarchal culture gives men power and privilege, we often have roles and expectations thrust upon us that we did not choose. How have we felt confined by gender roles and expectations? How can we confront sexism and patriarchy, deconstruct gender norms, and create healthy, sustainable forms of masculinity and individuality?'

An opportunity here to educate some of our future compadres?

Rose Afriyie: Violent gender roles

Article here. Excerpt:

'Andrea Dworkin, an author and activist, once said she believed “in the humanity of men against all the evidence.” Color me optimistic. I believe in the humanity of men who have been physically violent, no matter how deeply buried that humanity may be. We have gone to a very dark place when we say that there are crimes people can commit that rob them of their ability to rehabilitate. Faith in rehabilitation is not in opposition to the often-reported high relapse rates of violent offenders. It simply hopes to envision a world where people aren’t doomed to be battered or a batterer after one act of violence has occurred.

UK: Sexism claim by sacked Baby P boss has ‘no hope’

Story here. Excerpt:

'THE claim by former children's services director Sharon Shoesmith that she was sacked without compensation because she is a woman was dismissed today as nothing more than a “bargaining chip” to win higher damages.

Ms Shoesmith lost her £130,000-a-year job at Haringey in the furore over the council's failure to protect Baby P.

Experts believe she could win more than £1 million if her unlawful dismissal and sex discrimination claims against the council succeed.

Her case, lodged at Watford employment tribunal, is said to claim that “she was treated less favourably by the council than a man would have been in similar circumstances in that she was summarily dismissed from her job without compensation whereas a man would not have been so dismissed”.'

UK: Sexism claims rejected by employment tribunal

Story here. Excerpt:

'A LOUGHTON mum's claim that she was the victim of sexism at a City bank has been dismissed by an employment tribunal.

Anna Atkins, 52, said she was passed over for promotion at Standard Chartered because of a macho culture where meetings ended up in strip clubs.

During a six-day hearing at the London Central Employment Tribunal last month the account manager said her department was "typified by late-night drinking and cigar smoking" from which women were excluded.

A judgement issued on Monday (March 11) dismissed her three allegations of sex discrimination and six allegations of victimisation by senior executives at the bank.'

Does Sexism Still Reign In TV Advertising?

Article here. Excerpt:

'For many years television advertising was plagued by what we today consider to be ridiculous stereotyping with a woman portrayed as pretty much a subservient extension of her husband whose only role was to make him happy.

Today those kinds of ads are no longer broadcast and I’m glad to see the change. But there is one area where sexism in advertising seems to be ok, when it is used to portray men as dumb idiots who can’t cook, clean, take care of kids, etc.
...
But imagine if the same technique were used to show woman as helpless with a car, or unable to do household repairs, or driving badly ? The same ads in the same humorous spirit would be quickly banned under protests from advocacy groups.'

"Baseball no field of dreams for female athletes"

Article here. You won't see the author discussing the bat speed and hand eye coordination necessary to hit a 98 mph fastball. You also won't read anything about the difficulty of throwing a ball from the '408 foot sign at Yankee stadium to gun down a runner at home. Don't expect to read about the strength, balance, and stamina needed by a catcher during a three hour game. Excerpt:

'Girls face ostracism from boys who were their friends outside the game. “When they were young, if the girl was really good enough, sometimes she would be accepted by her teammates,” Cohen said. “The older she got, the more hostility she would face because the stakes are higher.” Scouts from professional teams and colleges are looking for prospects “and boys still feel that their masculinity is threatened because they’re going to be struck out by a girl or woman…. There’s a lot of gender issues involved when it comes to accepting a woman athlete on par with a male athlete on male teams.”
