Praxis International speaker: "I think I know a lot of men who deserve to be beaten"

Trudy Schuett mentions NCFM's work in her fantastic article in the Examiner about how Amanda McCormick of Praxis International apparently made a position statement on behalf of Praxis when she said she knows "a lot of men who deserve to be beaten" during her keynote address at the annual conference of the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Thank you, Trudy!

Mum, not dad, more likely to neglect kids

Article here. Excerpt:

'Mothers are more likely than fathers to neglect and emotionally and physically abuse their children, information obtained under freedom of information laws reveals.

But figures from the WA Department for Child Protection show substantiated cases of child sexual abuse against fathers still far outnumber those against mothers.

The data shows that parents were the perpetrators in almost 39 per cent of the 1505 substantiated cases of child abuse in 2007-08. Of the 582 cases of abuse by parents, mothers were responsible for 73 per cent, while fathers committed 27 per cent.

Mothers were more than 17 times more likely than fathers to neglect their children, while fathers were responsible for 85 per cent of sex abuse cases against children.
...
dults Surviving Child Abuse WA spokeswoman Michelle Stubbs said an initial look at the data did not present a clear explanation and other factors had to be considered.

UK: Happy birthday to the Men's Health Forum

Check this out. These guys are doing an incredible work in the area of men's health! Excerpt:

'The MHF is fifteen years old this year. A spotty teenager, slouching and taciturn save for the odd indecipherable grunt? The Forum's first short history is being written and talking to the author the other day got me thinking about how much has changed.

When we were a toddler, the Forum used to make the news. In fact, our president Ian Banks was quoted so often in the press that other organisations assumed we had an army of press officers when in fact we had barely any paid staff. Screaming kids get noticed.

We punched well above our weight because, oddly enough, health is traditionally one of the few subjects in the media that is female-led. But in the 90s, smarter journalists and editors looking for a new angle realised that their health coverage was neglecting 50% of the population. Suddenly, men were the new women. We even got our own magazines – GQ, Maxim, Men’s Health.'

Trudy Schuett: Your taxes encourage violence v. men

Article here. Excerpt:

'Proponents of the New Perspectives approach to domestic violence have long been aware of the sexist, and otherwise biased nature of what has become the "traditional" public response to domestic violence. To the detriment of the public in general, governments at all levels, from federal to local, have been forced to cooperate with political activist groups whose ultimate objectives have little or nothing to do with aiding couples and families where intimate parter abuse is a problem.

Utilizing a fabricated scenario that only addresses the perceived political nature of the issue from a radical feminist standpoint, these political activist groups have managed in the past several decades to establish themselves as "experts" in the field, when nothing could be further from the truth. Time and again, the feminist scenario of domestic violence fails to stand up to scrutiny, since there was never any substance behind the notion that all domestic violence is politically motivated and a political/governmental solution is by any means viable.'

Parents sue over circumcision death

Story here. Excerpt:

'The parents of a six-week-old boy who bled to death after a circumcision at Rosebud's Indian Health Service Hospital last year are suing the government for wrongful death.

According to documents filed Wednesday in federal court, Eric Keefe underwent a circumcision on June 13, 2008. His mother gave him Motrin and Tylenol for pain and he suffered massive blood loss at home that night, dying back at the hospital the next morning.
...
The Keefes are seeking $2 million for personal injury and wrongful death.

Sturgis lawyer Mick Strain, who represents the plaintiffs, said he and the parents wouldn't talk about the case until it is tried or settled. The file lists no lawyer for the government.'

Response to “Battered Woman Syndrome: Key Elements of a Diagnosis and Treatment Plan"

Via Marc A. Article here. Excerpt:

'I am writing to comment on the online article by Lenore Walker, EdD entitled “Battered Woman Syndrome: Key Elements of a Diagnosis and Treatment Plan.” In my view, Dr Walker’s report contains several inaccuracies and distortions—such as the notion that our society trains men to dominate and control women (“It is understood that domestic violence is part of gender violence. . . ”) Dr Walker provides no credible evidence for this claim.
...
It is worth mentioning that there is very little evidence that a battered women syndrome is any different from a battered men syndrome or from a battered child syndrome. Should we not be referring to a battered patients syndrome? Also worth noting that rates of domestic or intimate partner violence are among the highest in lesbian couples.'

Erin Pizzey: 'Why I loathe feminism ... and believe it will ultimately destroy the family'

Article here. Exceprt:

'ERIN PIZZEY set up the world's first refuge for battered women in 1971 - and went on to establish an international movement for victims of domestic violence. But what she has never made public before is that her own childhood was scarred by the shocking cruelty of both her parents. Here, for the first time, she tells the full harrowing story - and how it led her to a surprising, but deeply felt, conclusion ...
...
Thirty years later, when feminism exploded onto the scene, I was often mistaken for a supporter of the movement. But I have never been a feminist, because, having experienced my mother's violence, I always knew that women can be as vicious and irresponsible as men.
...
To outsiders, my father was a genial, intelligent man and my mother a famous party hostess with three beautiful children and a perfect diplomatic family. In fact, my parents were both violent, cruel people and we were all deeply damaged.

Opinion: Your image of a domestic-violence offender likely wrong

Article here. Excerpt:

'What does a domestic-violence offender look like? That's an easy one. He may be lying around the house half-drunk even now, while his victim is out working. He probably blames his unemployment on his criminal record. You know this guy's been in trouble with the law before.

Coming up in October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and one of our few consolations in facing this widespread social problem is that we have a pretty good idea of who the offenders are.
...
The real-life data aren't very kind to the stereotype.

For one thing, more than 1,000 of these guys don't fit the model because they're not guys. Almost exactly 20 percent, or one in five domestic-violence suspects, were women. This agrees with other research findings. But it's also true that frustrated police officers, unable to identify the main aggressor in a domestic fight, sometimes take both parties in.'

More women supporting families

Article here. Excerpt:

'U.S. companies have shed nearly 7 million jobs since the start of the economic downturn in December 2007. Men have lost three of every four of those jobs, prompting some labor market watchers to dub this downturn the “he-cession.”

Half the job losses have occurred in male-dominated fields such as construction and manufacturing. The meltdown on Wall Street and in the housing market delivered another large contingent of men to the unemployment lines. Even if these industries recover, they’re not expected to replace all the jobs they shed.
...
That change has led to major discomfort for some men who are still struggling with their new role. While his wife was willing to talk, Weishan declined to be interviewed for this story.

Carey Roberts: 'ACORN Falls from the Tree, Will Abuse Shelters Come Next?'

Article here. Excerpt:

'ACORN, the liberal activist group, was stripped of its funding by the House of Representatives Thursday following release of undercover videos showing lurid and criminal activities.

One tape showed an ACORN employee named Tresa Kaelke of San Bernardino, Calif. bragging how she had murdered her husband: "I shot him. And he died. Right there." To perfect her alibi, the ACORN worker declared how she had gone to a local domestic violence shelter where she "pleaded my case."
...
Recently Trudy Schuett of Examiner.com published an insider account of abuse shelters. She reveals, "We've seen cases where fictional abuse, contrived for the purposes of leverage in court, became a reality." In other words, shelter workers coached women like Tresa Kaelke how to fabricate a White Lie for purposes of manipulating the legal system.

Former NFL star tackles importance of reading

Story here. Excerpt:

'Tim Green, who played eight years with the Atlanta Falcons and is now a best-selling author of 15 books for adults and adolescents, brought his message about the importance of reading to students at Chenango Forks Middle School.

While describing himself as "a voracious reader," Green said many young people view reading as "a miserable exercise." He blames adults for this, saying they assign adolescents to read books that are not entertaining for them, not fun and "like eating cardboard."
...
Green has made 151 school appearances in the last two years. His appearance at Chenango Forks was arranged by Patricia Sweeney, the library media specialist.

Sweeney said one reason she wanted Green to come and talk is because his books appeal to "reluctant readers," boys especially.'

Washington Post: Obama's 'Man-Cession'

Article here. Excerpt:

'Much has been made of this fascinating Labor Department report, which USA Today put on its front page. It shows that women now hold almost half of all jobs in the US (49.83 percent, to be precise), up from 31.8 percent in 1964. One of the causes: men have been clobbered by the recent economic downturn, having lost three-quarters of the 6.4 million jobs wiped out since December 2007. Guy work like construction and manufacturing has been hard hit; meanwhile, the fastest growing sectors are health care, education and government, where women dominate new hires. These also happen to be the areas that are slated to get the biggest infusions of federal money under the president’s $787 billion fiscal stimulus plan.
