Opinion: Make misogyny a hate crime and let's all vow to end it

Article here. Excerpt:

'The individual abuser is always to blame for their crimes but those who ignored the multiple red flags, such as with Sarah Everard's murderer such as his interest in violent pornography, knowing that he was nicknamed "The Rapist" and his indecent exposure incidents, all share collective responsibility for allowing that culture of misogyny to blossom and thrive.

It is not good enough to just denounce them as 'bad apples' or say that they're 'monsters' when in truth they are not and pretending otherwise is a fallacy.

Yes they are at the extreme end of the scale but they're not a special breed - they're all someone's father, friend, husband, brother, colleague or son.
...
But this cultural change needs to come from the top, too. Misogyny absolutely should be classed as a hate crime, particularly as the rise of the INCEL movement has been found comparable to other forms of domestic terrorism.'

SCOTUS changed oral arguments in part because female justices were interrupted, Sotomayor says

Article here. Excerpt:

'Justice Sonia Sotomayor told an audience Wednesday that recent changes in the format of oral arguments were instituted in part after studies emerged showing that female justices on the court were interrupted more by male justices and advocates.

Sotomayor said the studies, including one by researchers Tonja Jacoby and Dylan Schweers in 2017, have had an "enormous impact" and led to Chief Justice John Roberts being "much more sensitive" to ensuring that people were not interrupted or at least that he would play referee if needed.

She also said that it is a dynamic that exists not only on the court but in society as well.'

"Most of the time women say things and they are not heard in the same way as men who might say the identical thing," she said.

Nobel Prize Foundation under fire for rejecting ethnic, gender quotas

Article here. Excerpt:

'The Nobel Prize Foundation is facing pushback after saying it would not implement gender or ethnicity quotas in selecting nominees. Only 59 women, or 6.2% of total winners, have ever received a Nobel Prize since its inception in 1901.

Göran Hansson, the secretary-general of the Royal Swedish Academy of Science and vice chairman of the board of directors for the Nobel Foundation, told the AFP in an interview published on Tuesday: “We have decided we will not have quotas for gender or ethnicity. We want every laureate [to] be accepted ... because they made the most important discovery, and not because of gender or ethnicity. And that is in line with the spirit of Alfred Nobel’s last will.”

UN Women, the UN branch dedicated to promoting gender equality around the world, criticized Hansson, saying in a statement, “Unfortunately, the underrepresentation of women Nobel laureates over the years is just another indicator of the slow progress on gender equality.”'

Article here. Excerpt:

'Teachers and equality campaigners have called on the Government to set out a “national strategy” including lessons on gender inequality to stop boys developing misogynistic attitudes in school.

The call comes in the wake of the murder of Sarah Everard, as well as the Everyone’s Invited campaign, which highlighted the sexual harassment and abuse of girls and women earlier in the year.

Rosamund McNeill, the assistant general secretary of the UK’s biggest teaching union, the National Education Union, told i that recent events had to be a “wake-up call”.'

South Africa: JSC lets politics trump conscience and excellence

Article here. Excerpt:

'The present incarnation of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) moves the goalposts so often that candidates for appointment to the bench sometimes appear to find themselves with a football on a golf fairway.

During the rerun of interviews last week for positions at the Constitutional Court, senior counsel Dali Mpofu questioned the candidature of two white men – advocate Alan Dodson SC and Gauteng high court judge David Unterhalter – and suggested their appointment would hinder transformation. This was despite the court, for the first time in its history, not having any white men on its bench. Consequently, the constitutional requirement that the court “broadly” reflects the demographics of South Africa did not exclude either of them.

Chinese Women Are Dumping Their Boyfriends Over a Feminist Comedian

'If young women in China want to know if their male partners support gender equality, there is a good way to find out: talk to them about Yang Li, a stand-up comedian who has turned into a feminist icon for her mockery of men.

Several female comedians have, since last year, gained fame during the stand-up contest Rock & Roast, a new cultural moment in China’s male-dominated comedy scene. Among them, Yang made the most direct, controversial jokes about men.

NJ state agency asks employees to avoid speaking at all-white, all-male panels

Article here. Excerpt:

'At least one state agency has a policy aimed at keeping its employees from presenting on panels where only white men will be speaking.

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority confirmed its existing Event Process and Governing Policy when asked about it by New Jersey 101.5. The policy has been in effect for more than a year.

“Under most circumstances, NJEDA staff should not participate when the panel/speakers are wholly comprised of white males,” a spokesperson said in a written response. “If staff are asked to participate in such a panel, they should inform the requester of NJEDA’s policy and, if appropriate, may suggest additional, diverse speakers.”

Sending a woman or a non-white male EDA staffer to take part in such a panel would adhere to the policy, the spokesperson confirmed.'

Boys in crisis: Schools are failing young males. Here's what needs to change in classrooms

Article here. Excerpt:

'We know that boys benefit from introducing lessons through dramatic points of entry that grab their attention. We know that boys are kinesthetic learners who benefit from hands-on activities where they learn by touch, exploration and manipulation.

The absence of these opportunities during the pandemic when so many students were learning online has had a considerable impact on educational advancement, especially so for boys.

In all-boys schools and classrooms, where teachers are focused on the unique social, emotional and learning needs of boys, young men are thriving. But I’m not issuing a rallying cry to nationalize single-gender education.
...
What I am saying is that within almost any school setting there’s room to improve our practices to ensure boys aren’t being unintentionally marginalized or excluded. Working to make our classrooms more boy-friendly is an important step in resolving the crisis young men face in our country.'

Scotland doesn't care about male victims

In the Scottish Parliament, Miles Briggs MSP (Conservative, Lothian), who himself has been through a sexual accusation that he was cleared of and described the experience as a "living hell", asked the First Minister if she will "investigate the possibility of establishment of family violence courts?"

Family Violence Courts are an idea promulgated through the United Nations, specifically to avoid some of the inconvenient legal safeties applied by most courts, such as the need for proof. The United Nations is where domestic abuse is defined as a 'gendered crime', so the idea is that these courts will consider any woman there as a victim and any man as an abuser.

Toxic masculinity: a fair assessment of male behaviour or a dangerous generalisation?

Article here. Excerpt:

'Growing up, British boys are constantly told to "be a man" or to "man up", and pushed towards adopting "male" qualities such as confidence, self-sufficiency, strength, assertiveness and dominance. By themselves, these traits are not inherently toxic, indeed they can be commendable, but when they are reinforced by the often unrealistic expectations of society, young men may struggle.

We know that men are far less likely to discuss mental health problems with a medical professional. In 2017, the suicide rate for men was 3.5 times higher than it was for women and men between the ages 45-49 have the highest suicide rate in England and Wales.'
