RADAR to VAWA: “This Time We’re Ready for You!”
posted by Matt on 10:13 AM May 19th, 2005
RADAR Project The current Violence Against Women Act will expire on September 30, and the renewal legislation is expected any day now. It is expected that the new VAWA bill will propose to expand and enhance services – but only for female victims.

That represents gross discrimination against men.

But this time, RADAR is ready for the expected round of media coverage that will extol the proposed law and will perpetuate the myth that women never assault their male partners. This is our 8-step game plan...

RADAR to VAWA: “This Time We’re Ready for You!”

First, RADAR has a committed group of experienced Media Monitors who are scouring the nation’s newspapers, looking for bias.

Second, RADAR has a fast alert system, consisting of e-lerts and notices placed on strategic websites. (If you are not yet signed up for the RADAR e-lerts, go to http://www.mediaradar.org/, and enter your e-mail address into the indicated space in the left-hand navigation bar – it’s that simple!)

Third, RADAR has proven that it is able to generate thousands of phone calls, e-mails, and letters.

Fourth, RADAR has succeeded in convincing the Washington Post, which is widely read by Washington lawmakers, to cut back on its inflammatory blood-and-guts DV articles.

Fifth, RADAR has established a quick-response system for the blogosphere.

Sixth, RADAR has partnered with other key groups who are working to assure that VAWA is male-inclusive.

Seventh, RADAR is upgrading its website to provide more information about VAWA.

And eighth, RADAR will be coordinating a series of Op-Ed articles that will be published on key internet sites.

There’s nothing to hold back, folks, this is going to be one to write home about!!

In my estimation, we only need to do two things in order to succeed in changing VAWA:

1) Get the sponsors to change the name to someting like "The Domestic Violence Reduction Act of 2005" so that it's name is no longer synonimous with women victims, and

2) Add a provision that makes applicants for aid accountable to demonstrate non-discriminatory behavior.

If we accomplish these two things, we will have won.

I think a lot of elected representatives still think that there's popular support for VAWA as is, and assuming that, will do little to change it. Personally, I think it needs to be very clear what we think of the current form of VAWA. VAWA is currently an act that does as much to empower battering (abusive) females and hurt male victims (and kids) who are victims of domestic violence as much as it does anything.

Sincerely, Ray
