No Rights to Cohabiting Women in Britain?
posted by Adam on 09:55 AM July 12th, 2004
News Dittohd writes "Is this really true? Or is it just more lies to stem the tide of more and more men deselecting the marriage option? And what about child support which they don't mention, I suspect conveniently. Isn't this the way it should be?"

They will also call on judges to exercise underused powers to award lump-sum maintenance payments for children born out of wedlock.

Funny that judges are powerless to enforce father's visitation rights, yet can find power to treat fathers like wallets after depriving them of a fair shake at custody. Time to join the revolution: www.fathers-4-justice.org

What are lump sum payments?

Sounds like an oxymoron, like government intelligence, or jumbo shrimp.

From Merriam Websters dictionary website:

Main Entry: 2 lump
Function: verb
1 : to group indiscriminately

Main Entry: 1 sum
Function: noun
1 : an indefinite or specified amount of money

So a lump sum would be an indiscriminately grouped amount of money, in other words, a single large amount rather than a number of smaller, individual payments.

You'll often see a lump sum payout option for lottery winnings, either the winner gets a certain amount per year for 20 years, or a single lump sum payment now.

I know exactly what a lump sum payment is. I was referring to the below quote from the article:

>They will also call on judges to exercise underused powers to award lump-sum maintenance payments for children born out of wedlock.

It sure sounds to me from the above that we are talking about a succession of "lump sum" payments. Especially when they are referred to as "maintenance" lump sum payments. Note also that the quote is talking in the plural. And if these lump sums are large amounts such as in the lottery example you give, where are we as men supposed to come up with these "lump sums"?

Seems to me that most men are strapped enough as it is trying to meet the child support and alimony payments currently being levied on us, especially if we are responsible for supporting more than one family.

... you refuse to marry or cohabit. Period, end of sentence. Do not live with a woman or marry, period. You will be much happier and lead a far more satisfyingly simpler life. Take it from a man who knows!
