Virus Spoofing Attack Targets Mensactivism.org Users
posted by Scott on 08:04 AM March 3rd, 2004
Announcements This morning I received an e-mail which claimed to be from "support@mensactivism.org." The message claims that the recipient's account has been disabled, and to see the attachment. It claims to be from "The Mensactivism.org team." The attachment, of course, is a virus (W32/Bagle). Please forward the entirety of any messages you receive along these lines (with the complete mail headers) to scott@mensactivism.org. Update: This is a known new internet worm that is attacking other organizations as well. Keep your anti-virus software up to date and don't trust suspicious or unsolicited e-mails.

We MRAs get labled as "whiners" and "angry" and a lot of other shit. I don't see on the MS boards them complaining about how we are targeting them for virus', denial of service attacks on their BBS, or going into their personal lives. But in 2 of the cases below I can say that 2 MSers tried to screw with my life because I had "dared" to argue with them. This "patriarchy" argument is a SHAM!! THEY use third party attacks, back door attacks, victimology, passive aggressive bullshit, and this E-mail (Virus) kind of thing to go after our movement. And STILL claim to be "victims". I don't blame the MSers per se, but their whole ilk use the same school of thought. If we had done this to the MSers you KNOW they would be using it as a PROOF of MRAs trying to stop their message. The truth is, as evidenced by this attack and what has been tried to be done to me in the last 5 months, that WE wouldn't conceive of trying to do this back door petty shit to people. The "victim" class of feminazis use EXACTLY this kind of cowardly shit.

As most of you know I've been targeted 3 times in the last 5-6 months by feminazis.

One tried to end my 14 year military career: she lost a "wage gap" arguement on a BBS and was humiliated. (I really wasn't trying to humiliate her, but her arguments were weak as hell and I tore em up). She went after my job in real life.

One sent me an E-mail from a dummy Yahoo account with the subject line Beene & Wife (I thought it was a military thing). My wife opened it, due to my upcoming field exercise where I will be gone for 2+ weeks, and it was a letter calling me, in no uncertain terms, a rapist. It freaked my wife out.

And one of the MSers tried to get my home phone number to call me. That's not speculation, it was bragged about on their board. The rape e-mail was the same week... you do the math.

Anyone here intimidated? Lol, didn't think so.

Agreed. The French Resistance were not "cowards" because they remained anonymous while engaged in activism against the Nazi occupation. However the time is coming soon when, as the song goes, "we will come from the shadows".

Come from the shadows? When? After everyone else with guts has done all the work, put up with all the harassment, and all that's left is to garner the resulting benefits?

Give me a break! You won't "come from the shadows" until the "all clear!" signal is given.

When you obtain a user name here, it's no less anonymous because you can assign yourself any handle you like, as long as its not already used. Call yourself "scuzbucket" if you like that name and it's not already taken. Who cares? But at least we'll know who's posting comments and answering ours after we comment on yours. It's impossible to carry on any semblance of a conversation when there is more than one "anonymous" poster adding comments to the same discussion. Getting to know a little of the personality behind the name is also impossible.

I had a problem some time ago after I posted my e-mail address to article postings. A while after that I started getting 10-15 garbage advertisement SPAM's a day. Well, I fixed that problem by changing ISP's, getting a new e-mail address, and leaving the e-mail address block blank when I submit articles to this website. It's been a long time since and I haven't had that problem or any other problem with unwelcome intrusions since then (other than legit marketers who give you the opportunity to stop future unwanted solicitations).

Could an expert hacker track me down from my postings? Maybe. But I'll bet our computer software (especially if you use the latest Windows OS) leaves a trail of code that would enable an expert to track us back to our computer even when signing anonymously. And if you don't believe that, why do you think assigning yourself a random handle would make yourself more vulnerable?

Although I can't prove it, I am pretty sure that some feminazis some where tried to access my files to put porn websites there. For what reason, I don't know. Perhaps it was illegal porn and they wanted me to somehow get caught with it, I don't know.
I dont go to porn sites so it probably wouldn't have stuck, anyway. Scott, do you remember? I e-mailed you and asked if anything like that was happening on your end or if any of the other "regulars" were expirienceing the same problem.
It could have been feminazis or not, I was never sure. But I certainly wouldn't put it passed them to try, simply because they didn't like a comment or submission that I made.

It seems that MND has also been attacked. Their home page has an announcement stating, "Email Messages From 'Support(at)MensNewsDaily.com' Should Be Deleted and Attachments Should Never Be Opened."

If this is an attack on mens' rights groups and orgs, I hope it leads to legal action against the perps. Hell, I hope it leads to legal action in any case.

I don't think this is a specific virus targeted at mensactivism.org. My college already sent the student an email warning about a virus with the label "The [College Name].edu Team". The virus probably just copies the domain of whatever email address it is sending to.

You are correct. I have confirmed that this is happening to several organizations. This is still a very dangerous worm given the way it presents itself to its users, though.

So, to all Winodows OS users: keep your AV software updated and be wary of any unsolicited e-mail attachments.

FYI, Mark, et al, I own a domain name that gets VERY few hits, and I got the same message. AFAIK, that domain name has NEVER been associated with any sort of activism activities, so I have to say that I doubt that this attack had anything to do with MANN as a specific target.

If it is, then someone's doing a LOT of work to identify targets.

There is a huge spate of viruses and worms loose on the internet right now. One of the ways in which they work is by "spoofing" email addresses. This means that they send emails that appear to come from one person, when in fact they come from another.

Right now, it's not safe to click on any attachments from someone you don't know, and maybe even not from those you know (especially if it is a 35K or 64K .zip file).

The deal is, these things appear to come from administrator@whateversite.com, manager@whateversite.com, or any number of users at whateversite.com. This doesn't mean ANYTHING about that site, except that someone, somewhere, who got infected has an email address ending in whateversite.com in his/her address book.

Does that make sense? These virii are not targeting anyone specifically (other than the coordinated DOS attacks on SCO and MicroSoft's websites - which were probably cover for these viruses other activities as trojan horses stealing passwords and bank account information).

So let's not get our boxers in a tither... to be honest, most virus writers are male, or at least used to be. Now actual social engineering attacks, like Steven talked about are much more likely to happen than a virus targeting users of this site.

Hope that helps.
