"Wifebeater" Night is Offensive?
posted by Adam on 09:40 AM February 25th, 2004
News Dittohd writes "Isn't it funny how this lighthearted joke at a bar is considered offensive but "Boys Are Stupid, Throw Rocks at Them" t-shirts are harmless fun. Notice the last line in the article, "Police will visit the pub to outline their dismay. ""

It figures, doesn't it?
Any and all jokes, references and actual violence towards men are perfectly acceptable, cute and funny.
But when the tables are turned women's groups and like minded people start screaming; "foul!"
and "This trivializes 'family violence'!"
Yeah, well, where are all of you "concerned citizens" when men are the targets of such things? I'll tell ya where; off laughing and being hypocrits, THAT'S where.
Sorry, ladies, You'll get NO sympathy from me, what so ever.
In fact I think we should tell them something like what they'd say to us in this situation; 'Oh, just shut up and take it like a WOMAN!'

I worked this past summer for a couple of weeks as a security guard at a theme park nearby. While I was there, a female colleague mentioned wearing a "wifebeater." I was curious (and not a little offended) what the genesis of this term was and she told me that she understood that men who beat their wives frequently wore this (it's basically a sleeveless t-shirt, worn tight). I asked her what is typically worn by women who beat their husbands, to which she replied that she didn't know of that many. I cited some statistics, most of which are well known here. So I let her know stratightaway that I found this term to be offensive and stereotypical. She understood (though I still think she's generically feminist, but she's also black, so I don't know how the whole race/feminism culture fit together with her). The conversation was quite civil, and we were able to work together the rest of the summer without incident. Obviously, the term wasn't going to go away simply based on a discussion between the two of us, but at least one more woman knows that there are at least a few men out there who aren't willing to put up with this crap.

This is a perfect example of the hypocrisy of "women's advocates" who pounce on this "wifebeater" issue while delighting in all the assaults on male genetilia in movies and TV commercials.

Sure, women have the right to protest or boycott or whatever. The thing that surprises me is that they were able to get the fucking POLICE involved!

Can you imagine one of us calling the police about "Boys Are Stupid Throw Rocks At Them" shirts being offered for sale? Can you imagine being taken seriously? Can you imagine the police actually going to the store?

TLE,
Yeah, but if we called the police about the "Boys are stupid throw rocks at them" shirts, the police would arrest US!

I've added "Wifebeater" Night is Offensive? to the Men's Hour Blog. It's got links for the news video (which seems to have disappeared from the original site, so I've put a cache version on the Men's Hour).

If a member of the Hell's Angels invaded your home and threatened you with the same degree of dispossession that a divorce would effectively bring about and you killed the punk on the spot where he stood...there would not be twelve voters in your district other than the Hell's Angels who would hold it against you....off of the pedestal and on to the high horse.
