Trident Gum castration campaign
posted by Adam on Tuesday April 08, @09:09AM
from the News dept.
News SJones writes "Trident Gum has been running an ad featuring two men being castrated by a squirrel which runs up their pant leg and bites their testicles while they scream. Trident's CONTACT link on their web page is not working so they will have to be contacted by other means to complain. But please do complain. Meanwhile, there is a web site that rates ads and has the Trident ad, which you can click on and watch before voting your opinion. The link to the site with the ad is here and so far has rated the ad highly. But only 14 people, including myself, have voted. Only a few of us can bring the rating down closer to where it belongs for using gender-specific sexual violence to sell gum. Please vote and remember this web site next time an ad is run featuring sexual abuse of males to sell a product (and you can be sure there will be a next time, unfortunately.)"

The Ad execs at the firms that make these must be gay masochists and feminist misandrists who love this type of filth.

How can any sensible person think that white men have all the power in this country when pop culture and major media outlets ONLY attack them.

So many commercials now use attacks on male reproductive organs as a selling tool. While implied violence toward a women is never seen and considered highly offensive. Such hypocrisy.

I've seen this stupid ad.
Looks like Progressive insurance has been a big influence in the advertising world.
All it takes is ONE to start a "Trend".
I say we should hit them hard like we did progressive insurance, beat them down hard and fast.
BTW, Isn't it interesting that ALL the "doctors" are WHITE MEN?
Why? easy, Because you could NEVER, EVER get away with genital mutilation on a female of ANY race, color or creed.
If the doctor biten by the squirrle were a Black man, the ad would be called "racist" and NEVER see the light of day, PIRIOD!
I know I complain alot about the raw deal we Indians get, and we do, But it isn't safe to be a white man, either, is it? If ever a time there was for Indian men and White men to call each other "brother", it is NOW!

OK, just went and voted myself. At that point the rating went down to 3.4
They probably log ip numbers in case anyone was thinking of multiple voting. No need to see a vote disqualified if we all give it a 1 just 1 time each as well. Just a suggy.

You seem to have a problem with reading comprehension. The suggestion was to vote one time per person (perfectly valid), *not* for one person to vote multiple times.

If you sent them an email, I hope you quoted the above post word-for-word, rather than paraphrasing your misunderstanding of it.

"I always wondered about that fifth dentist. Watch this a few times, and try not to laugh."

and...

"Gum has got to be tough to sell, you can only show so many pouting women & men pop a piece of gum and imagine sparks flying... Here Trident went the other way and produced a sharp, witty, fun commercial. Tied with two of the Bud Lights for best of the evening. Of all the commercials, this is one where I might actually consider picking up the product as a way of rewarding a job well done."

there is a long way to go before we ever see commercials depicting violence towards men taken off the air. It's all I've ever known in my life. My generation has grown up with these ads all around us and most of us think its just the norm. I've even seen sexual violence toward boys portrayed as a joke. What kind of sick culture do we live in?

Here is my transcript of this ad, for those who are unable to get the media player to work:

Narrator: “Four out of five dentists surveyed would recommend Trident for their patients who chew gum, but what about the fifth dentist?”

Five dentists are shown sitting at a table. The first four dentists say ‘yes’ in sequence. A squirrel runs up the leg of the fifth dentist, and a loud “munch” can be heard — presumably the sound of the squirrel biting the testicles of this man. The fifth dentist then screams “NOOOOO!!!!!” in agony.

Narrator: “One thing’s for sure, long lasting Trident is good for teeth.”

Let's give these advertising jerks our worst.

I stand corrected; this is offensively sick and incredibly assinine; commercials have been CENSORED from being shown which were less bad than this.

However, any asswipe can simply couch the sickest message as a "joke," and some clown will cackle his ass off over it, while the "no sense of humor" defense against any protest is always accepted by the media.

Just hypothetically speaking, of course; I am NOT advising for or against this course of action.

I think this protest is a bit premature, considering the detail being inferred here.
I didn't see the ad, but how do you know what that squirrel's doing? Do they say something to this effect? It sounds more innocent.

While the portrayal of such sexual battery against men is definitely the most heinous crap in the media, I just don't think this sounds like a reference to that, so much as just the cliched "squirrel running up the pant-legs" joke.

In addition to the squirrle running up the man's pants-leg, one hears an un-mistakable "Crunch" noise, and the guy(s) grab at their crotches. That is done below camera level, but it is still obvious.
Also one must take into account "conditioned response". Most people have been subjected to years of "comedic" male-genital mutilation. At this point it takes NO immagination to know where the squirrle goes or what it is biteing. We are automaticaly conditioned to know that.
