Is the NH Men's Commission Being Sabotaged?

from the news dept.
News Last Tuesday, the list of nominees NH Governor Jeanne Shaheen made for the New Hampshire Commission on the Status of Men were released. Information about the seven nominees can be found on the NCFC-NH web site. However, the news is not all good. NCFC-NH members spent a lot of time lobbying for passage of this bill, and were alone through much of this process. Now that the list has been released (after tremendous delay, I might add), we are surprised to find that few of the names are even familiar to us. One individual on the list, Scott Hampton, even went on NH Public Radio debating Rep. Bickford about the legislation, saying that NH does not need a men's commission. It is suspicious, to say the least, that Hampton would then be nominated for the commission. Is the commission being sabotaged? I personally believe it is. And we only have about two weeks to stop it. For this reason, you will see a much lower number of new stories posted to MANN for the next week or so. I'm going to be putting a lot of resources into getting to the bottom of this mess and trying to do what I can correct it.

I'm sure you're already doing this, but I want to encourage you to identify the parties who would benefit from this economically and do what you can to get their support. One party that comes to mind (it occurs to me from a post elsewhere on this site) is the doctors working in men's health: they would likely be interested in anything that spreads the word about getting tested/treated for male-predominant diseases. Also, the coaches of men's sports teams at NH colleges and universities might well be vocal in this effort: they cannot afford to see the decline of men's sports put them out of a job. How about the admissions offices of UNH, etc? Declining male enrollment is hurting their bottom line, too.

Just some thoughts.

Stabbed in the back by politicians and screwed as a reward for working within the system. Imagine that.

I have had similar experiences; when I was trying to open a men's shelter once it was nearly dictated to me that it would be a halfway house to help "male abusers" reform themselves. And the realtor trying to find me a place was threatened with a boycott. And threats were made to people who I talked to about renting from them. And police harassment. And requirements that I exist under different rules than the "womyn's shelter." Requirements of "registering" all them men who came there. Refusal by the press to publicize. Changing of zoning. Denial of a hearing on an appeal for it. Wanting a pheminist "oversight panel." And so on. And so forth.

I wish it were different.
