"U.S. NAVAL HOSPITAL OKINAWA, Japan (Oct. 12, 2005) -- More than 200 men, women and children came together Oct. 8 at Lester Middle School to battle domestic abuse by participating in the 2nd annual Joint Services Family Shelter Domestic Violence Awareness 5k Run/Walk.

The annual run/walk took place in conjunction with this month’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The event is intended to raise domestic violence awareness, explained Emeline Hastings, the shelter manager at the Joint Services Family Shelter.

More than 30 volunteers came out to register participants, pass out T-shirts and purple ribbons and serve as road guards while participants completed the course.

The opening ceremonies kicked off after the 6:30 a.m. registration session came to a close. Several key speakers offered inspiration for the run and information on domestic violence, including Tech. Sgt. Robert Hastings, the section chief of electronic warfare for the 353rd Special Operations Group, and a former victim of domestic abuse.

“A woman is abused every 15 seconds,” Tech. Sgt. Hastings said during the ceremony. “That’s 5,760 women every 24 hours.”

According to Tech. Sgt. Hastings, the statistics for male victims of abuse are even higher.
“A man is abused every 14 seconds,” he said. “That’s 6,192 men every day.”

Once the key speakers left the podium, the runners took a few minutes to stretch their muscles, and then lined up at the starting point."
