USA TODAY: College gender gap widens

mens_issues writes "It seems that USA TODAY is finally recognizing that the education system over the last few decades has been so tilted against boys that it is resulting in a gender gap of 57% women to 43% men. The disparity is even greater for black men.

While the article is not perfect (it also mentions the so-called wage gap as if it were fact), it is an improvement. The article is here.

Divorce Parties

Anonymous User writes:

"'Good Morning America' Celebrates Divorce in the United States

ABC’s Andrea Canning on Sunday's “Good Morning America” did a report on Divorce Parties. That’s right, married women having a party to celebrate their divorces. In fact, Canning in her report referred to the party as “Part celebration, part exorcism.”

At this party, they play games like throwing the wedding ring into the toilet, as well as with voodoo doll figurines of the former husband.

Of particular note, the report made no mention of ex-husbands having such parties. Quite the contrary, the only person in this piece who wasn't celebrating was a divorced man: "I don't find anything about divorce to be funny at all. I find the whole experience rather tragic."

RADAR Alert: PBS Smears Fathers Who Contest Child Custody

Beginning this coming Thursday, PBS stations around the country are planning to air a film entitled "Breaking the Silence, Children's Stories". This film denigrates divorcing fathers with it's bald-faced assertion that in "75% of cases in which fathers contest custody, fathers have history of being batterers".

MSN: Wow, a Marriage Article Not Written by a Woman or Manhole!

A surprise from MSN: What a Happy Marriage Really Looks Like

I truly believe -- and I know I can get a lot of backing from my fellow husbands on this -- that women worry way too much about The Relationship, worry that even the smallest problem is the first step on the road to divorce court. I would be the last one to deny that there are a certain number of marital stress points. But many of them -- certainly the five detailed below -- are not worth one moment of lost sleep.

UN Report Cites Russian Men in Crisis

Well it's nice to see a UN report that isn't all about women. But it comes at such a terrible price. Read about it here.

From the article:

"Stereotypes of men's behaviour in Russia include excess alcohol consumption, drug addiction and smoking as stress reduction measures and ways of demonstrating manhood. Growth of suicides among men is an extreme form of reaction to growing socio-economic pressure and inability to perform the traditional role of breadwinner," the statement said.

CA Bar Journal Runs NCFM-LA Letter re Male DV Victims

Way to go, Marc!

"Men are victims, too"

Text:

As an attorney who works with male victims of domestic violence, I was very offended by your article, “Safety and services under one roof” (August). Every example of domestic violence in the article was male-on-female, and the article was prefaced with a drawing of “the difference between the family’s old life and their new life after Dad is gone.” Male victims are stigmatized and ignored enough as it is without having to read articles like yours.

NYTimes' David Brooks Addresses Boys' Lag in Education

David Brooks helps with the Lace Curtain problem with this article. Alas, the NYT has recently decided to start charging for access to their Op-Ed content, but if you subscribe, apparently, you can register for site access "for free". If not, it's worth a look next time you're at your local library. It's in the Oct. 16, 2005 issue of the New York Times in the Op-Ed section, titled: "Mind Over Muscle". The Times graciously allows unpaying readers the first sentence:

"If we want to help boys keep up with girls, we have to have an honest discussion about innate differences between the sexes."

I read it in the NYT today and thought, "Wow, how did this get past the editor-in-chief?"

UK Men - Discriminated against in Cancer Research

Rob writes "At last, the actual proof that men are discriminated against in Prostate Cancer funding versus Breast Cancer. The opening paragraphs are:"A MAN diagnosed with prostate cancer has only one-quarter of the cash spent on research into his disease compared to the amount devoted to a woman’s breast cancer. The wide discrepancy shows the scale of the discrimination against men. The two diseases kill similar numbers."
And in the biggest selling UK Sunday newspaper too! Of course the UK's female Health Minister said:“Gender is not a factor in any of the government’s decisions on cancer funding.” Sure - unless you're female!"

'Female champion' Hewitt discriminated against man

bandersnatch writes "From The Independent:

Career sexism that stops women "achieving their full potential" is something that the former trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt fought hard against. But it seems that her fight against sexism also includes discriminating positively towards women. Yesterday, it emerged she was found guilty of overlooking a strong male candidate for a job in favour of a weaker female applicant. Mr Hanney used the Freedom of Information Act to access the interviewers' notes, which included comments such as "Malcolm Hanney, much the strongest candidate" and described him as the "clear favourite". The notes concluded the panel "agreed to appoint Malcolm Hanney". But the ultimate decision was left to Patricia Hewitt, who was in charge of sex discrimination laws as minister for women and equality. She appointed Christine Channon, who was placed third in line by the RDA."

Mainstream Media Recognition of Unequal Treatment of Accused Sex Offenders

Evil White Male Oppressor writes "As
yet another story emerges about a female teacher, this one involving a teacher who allegedly cut her wrists with broken glass in front of her class as well as performed oral sex on a 9-year-old boy in her classroom, let students peek down her blouse and talked to some of the children about sexual matters, Fox News does a story about how female teachers are often treated differently in the media than male teachers who have sex with underage students.

"The main dichotomy is in coverage — men are demonized, women are diagnosed," Felling said. "Men are beasts, but women are troubled, or mentally ill." Or the women are simply portrayed as voluptuous and sexual. Yet they quickly point out that sometimes, the "offenders" turn out not to be guilty. 'The teacher has to be concerned because there can be a vindictive kid" who can falsely accuse the person at the head of the class of a sex crime."

TELL THAT TO THE FALSELY ACCUSED MEN IT HAPPENS TO IN AND OUT OF SCHOOL ALL THE TIME..."

Sperm donor to pay child support

Steve P writes "Sperm donor to pay child support

From correspondents in Stockholm, Sweden

October 13, 2005

A SWEDISH man who donated his sperm to a lesbian couple must pay child support for the three children he fathered, Sweden's Supreme Court ruled today.

The man, now 39, donated his sperm to the couple in the early 1990s. Three sons were born during the years 1992-1996, according to Swedish news agency TT which reported the ruling.

The man told the court that he and the women had agreed that he would play no role in the boys' child rearing and that the two women would be their parents.

Nonetheless, the man signed a document confirming that he was the biological father of the children.

Shortly after he signed the document, the two women separated and the biological mother demanded that the man pay child support.

The man took the case to court, but lost in the district and appeals courts.

The Supreme Court upheld those rulings today, saying that as the biological father he is required to pay for the children's upbringing."
