'Wondermum' article in British newspaper - father is nominee
posted by Matt on 01:02 PM March 23rd, 2006
The Media Craig writes "From 'The Sun' on Tuesday 21st about 'wondermums'. Six mothers from across the UK and Ireland have been nominated as wondermums-except one of the mothers is actually a single father of two nominated by his kids. Read about and vote for the nominees here.

It's nice to see positive recognition for fathers for a change, especially single fathers. I voted for the father and I hope others will do the same."

Remember the old adage - vote early, vote often. Unfortunately the fact that any of us can vote any number of times does rather devalue the whole exercise.

We should remember to vote for people because they are awesome folks not because of their sex. If we just vote for George because he is a man, than we are being slightly sexist ourselves. It is great that people are recognizing father's for what they really are (equally wonderful parents!) but we should all remember to pay more attention to WHO a person is instead of WHAT a person is.

I have to agree with you Underage, but what is happening here is a political action, and sometimes one must use what one can to make a statement. Since there is only one Man named as a Wundermum, and his Children nominated him, I think he qualifies. Thank you for your insight, and wisdom.

I think everyone is missing the point and the problem in a man being nominated as "Wondermum". The subtle implication is that men are so rarely good parents that when you actually find a good male parent, that they have to be included in a female parenting contest. Why not a "Wonderpop" or "Wonderparent" contest? And then when men are recognized it is with a feminine award. This has its own implications as well. This implies that females have some sort of God given natural prediliction to being a good parent which only they can graciously bestow upon a male who is some freakish exception to the rule. The rule that women are the natural and superior parent. I hold no hard feelings to the male in this particular contest. And if he is the best parent I hope he wins. Not the best mom, but the best PARENT. But I would not have accepted the nomination let alone the award simply because I will not be an accomplice to those who knowingly or unknowingly demean the true purpose and concept of men and fathers.
