You Are What You Learn

News Ray writes "This study says Girls Have Been Faster Learners, but faster learners of what? And what biases of the reasearchers led them to conclude that what girls learn is what boys should also learn? Are educational researchers telling males, "This is a woman's world," rather than taking a more objective approach showing that the sexes learn different things at different rates based on their interests, and perhaps their "hard wired" genetic differences?"

For chimpanzees, the differences in learning how to use a fishing stick makes sense. Termites are a vital source of dietary protein for females whereas male chimps can hunt for small monkeys.

As the article makes clear, male little chimps are less interested in learning this particular lesson. So the article might as well been titled, "Males don't bother learning skills of little use to them".

But instead, the headline pursues the usual misandristic line. The headline writer didn't want men to forget their supposed natural inferiority, because otherwise men might get uppity and start demanding equal rights.

Over the last few years Britain The United States Australia and New Zealand have all run televised I.Q tests on programs called "test the nation".According to the published findings on each respective website every country that ran these tests found that men scored higher than women , and in fact the BBC, again according to there own website has run a wide variety of these types of tests covering a broad range of topics such as current events history etc and of all the tests done the only one that women scored higher on then the men was the relationship test.I guess that must be because they spend so much time hanging on to mommy as they both grub for worms.

A few years back i saw a television documentary that coincidentally was shot on the grounds of a zoo in Switzerland and dealt with the social structure of chimp society. They had a community of chimps that they were able to observe living in an outside enclosure seperated from the public by a large moat and dotted by a large number of trees most of which had long since been stripped bear of not only their leaves but also their bark. There were still a few trees however that the zoo staff had been able to protect and one in particular that was still fairly young and had the base of its canopy no more than 7 or 8 feet from the ground. The zoo staff had wrapped an electrified fence around the base of its canopy and this fence extended about 4 feet out form that base at about a 30 degree angle, looking somewhat like an upside down umbrella.

There was one adolescent male chimp however that spent a great deal of time looking for ways to beat the system and he was shown trying a number of unsuccesfull things before he finally stumbled upon a tree stump. This particular stump was about 3 feet long and still had some of its root structure still in tact,so that when the stump was turned on end to rest on this root structure it extended up from the ground at about a 45 degree angle. So once dude figures this out he calls buddy over and he holds the stump in place and tries to get buddy to run up the stump and jump over the upside down umbrella like fence, but buddy is younger and not quite as confident or motivated as dude so after a couple half hearted attempts he goes back to harassing his sister. So dude tries a few attempts on his own, just positioning the stump then taking a running go at it,but this doesnt work so finally he calls over buddy number two and this time he gets buddy to hold the stump and after a few attempts to guage the distant he makes one running go at it grabs an overhanging limb just clear of the fence and swings up into the canopy :) .This of course causes one hell of a commotion among the other chimps who all immediately gather at the base of the tree imploring dude to share the new found wealth and the funniest thing was to watch dudes reaction,he sprawls out on one of the branches like a conquering Ceaser being fed grapes by his harem, but once he got all the adulation and attention he felt he deserved he started stripping the tree bear and sharing the wealth that he and he alone had worked so hard for.
This was a very direct methodical attack on a problem never before encountered by chimps and required a level of reasoning and abstract thinking that was impressive to say the least. And these are the types of strengths and abilities developed by males as a direct result of heading off to "play" and examining the world and how it works instead of hanging on to mommy.

Check out this baboonery in The Economist under the title "Peacemakers" (peacemakers are of course females)

Dr Sapolsky and Dr Share are therefore watching the troop intently, to see what, if anything, causes its males to revert to the tried and tested macho methods of normal baboon life.

If baboons could read this article, they would be pissed. The male baboons would chase these psuedo-Scholars back to their dung hills in Stanford, and the female baboons would organize a great feast when their beloved male baboons returned from purging their territory of stupid humans disturbing the peace.

how they failed to compare how fast male and female chimps learned how to hunt monkeys in the trees? And who teaches them how to do this? Probably the dad chimps. But God forbid dad is even mentioned here.

Males do not need the skills of termite fishing, but they do need the physical dexterity that play offers, and which later the females will benifit from. So aren't the males choosing the wiser course in working on the skills which will benifit them?
