Fact: If someone wants to kill you, beat you up, or take your children from you, a restraining order (particularly one that does not require that you inform the person so "restrained") will never protect you. That person will simply violate the order and kill you, or whatever it is they intend to do. It happens all the time.
If, however, that person is truly harmless and law-abiding, they will tend to comply with the order (meaning, of course, that no such order was needed). They might, however, wind up in jail for something totally innocent. This also happens all the time.
Think of it this way: If you had a problem in your neighborhood with people running stop signs, would it make sense to simply put up more stop signs? Would this somehow force people to comply with traffic laws they will tend to ignore, or will it simply serve as an annoyance for those of us who stop at stop signs every time?
Calling for more restraining orders is a nonsensical, myopic stance to take. Doing MORE of something that ISN'T working already is the very definition of bad policy. Or at least that's what I learned in grade school.

Man receives six year prison term for abuse!
(Jan 2000) A man was sentenced to six years in prison for "ABUSING" a woman and her 17 year old daughter as they were entering a local post office. Court testimony revealed that the man in question was going to the local post office in order to check his mail when he noticed a woman and her daughter behind him. He stopped and held the door open for the two women so they could enter the post office. The woman abruptly stopped and turned around and went in the opposite
direction with her daughter leaving the man holding the door open.
Later that day, the woman and her daughter were found in an "Abuse Shelter" that was run by an organization called New Hopeful for Women, which is located in a Northeastern State. The shelter's purpose was geared towards victims of "Door Openers"! The shelter aided the woman and
her daughter in obtaining a "Protection from Door-Opener" order. Of course the charges had to be EMBELLISHED by the shelter in order to make them stick! That was done without any problem!
The Charges:
I am a feminist. I became a feminist in 1971.
One year after becoming a feminist, the abuse began.
I have been abused all of my life. I am fearful for the safety of myself and my daughter. I am tired of feeling afraid and unsafe when men hold doors open for me.
This fear is so great that I have fallen to the floor dizzy. I have a permanent bone problem behind my ear from falling.
I couldn't even count the number of times that I have been forced to fall down dizzy because men insist on holding doors open for me.
These men have emotionally abused me and my daughter. I have basically been controlled by the fact that men hold doors open for me and I want it
to be over!
Since being at the shelter, the woman's daughter has claimed that she too was abused when she was 5 years old. She states that another 5 year old held a door open for her as well! Even though the man's mother and father and his former school teacher testified on his behalf, the testimony did NOT sway the Judge. The man was sentenced to six years
in prison without any chance of parole. The house and any other property that he owned was transferred to the woman as direct compensation for his "Abuse"! Governor Kingsley who was flanked by the victim's attorney who was from an organization called Pine Tree "Illegal" and the director of New Hopeful for Women stated that he was glad the court was sending a clear message to men. He further stated "This type of abuse will NOT be tolerated"! The man has written to his political representatives...so far his requests have fallen on deaf ears!
