RADAR Alert: It's Time for the Inspector General to Investigate What Went Wrong at PBS
posted by Matt on 06:18 AM December 12th, 2005
RADAR Project On December 2nd, the Public Broadcasting Service Ombudsman Michael Getler issued his report on Breaking the Silence: Children's Stories [http://www.pbs.org/ombudsman]. Getler criticized the program, saying:

  • "there was no recognition of opposing views on this program."
  • "I thought this particular program had almost no balance, and went too far, turning it, at least in my mind, into more of an advocacy, or point-of-view, presentation."
  • "the totality of the presentation came across as quite tilted"

It's Time for the Inspector General to Investigate What Went Wrong at PBS

This criticism came hard on the heels of the report by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Ombudsman, Ken Bode [http://www.cpb.org/ombudsmen/051129bode.html]. Bode described the program as "slanted", said "there is no hint of balance in Breaking the Silence", and concluded that "Breaking the Silence needs to be reviewed for accuracy, fairness, and balance."

PBS and their affiliates have systems in place to assure adherence to the PBS Editorial Standards and Practices. Given the unanimity of both the PBS and the CPB ombudsmen on how seriously flawed this program was, it's clear that this program represents a massive system failure.

So RADAR is requesting that CPB's Inspector General, Ken Konz, conduct an investigation of Breaking the Silence: Children's Stories and make specific recommendations for how to make sure a system failure like this one doesn't happen again. A copy of the letter to Inspector General Konz can be read at http://www.mediaradar.org/docs/RADAR_letterToCPB_InspectorGeneral.pdf.

Please call or fax CPB's Inspector General with the message:

“Both the PBS and the CPB ombudsmen have stated that Breaking the Silence: Children's Stories lacked any balance and ignored the existence of any alternative views. The CPB ombudsman called for Breaking the Silence to be reviewed for accuracy, fairness, and balance. Please conduct such a review and recommend changes to guarantee that future programs comply with the US Congressional mandate to assure ‘strict adherence to objectivity and balance in all programs or series of programs of a controversial nature.’”

RE: Breaking the Silence: Children’s Stories & Breaking the Silence, Journeys of Hope

Dear Mr. Konz:

Both the PBS and the CPB ombudsmen have stated that Breaking the Silence: Children's Stories lacked any balance and ignored the existence of any alternative views. The CPB ombudsman called for Breaking the Silence: Children’s Stories to be reviewed for accuracy, fairness, and balance.

Please conduct a review, analyzing the “accuracy,” “fairness,” and “balance” of Breaking the Silence: Children’s Stories as well as Breaking the Silence: Journeys of Hope.

Please recommend changes to guarantee that future programs comply with the US Congressional mandate to assure ‘strict adherence to objectivity and balance in all programs or series of programs of a controversial nature.

This "documentary" was CLEARLY feminist propaganda, plain and simple.
The problem is is that it is not PBS alone where this sort of thing resides. It is RAMPANT throughout the ENTIRE media.
While I am pleased that this "Breaking the silence" propaganda piece is getting the scrutiny that it is, What about the rest of the media?

One thing at a time, I guess. And this IS a good start.

If I drove up and down Hollywood with a big sign
saying, "NEWS MEDIA IS SEXIST AND HATEFUL AGAINST MEN," would that make you feel any better. I hope it would, but first I have to make the "NEWS MEDIA" insert. Of course when the insert is made it also gets put on another sign on another day, and it will say, "MAN-HATING NEWS MEDIA HARMS US ALL."

Don't worry, I already know where CNN and CBS are in Hollywood, and where NBC is in Burbank. ABC and FOX are just a Google away.

My biggest worry is that I will do all this work and suddenly everyone will just turn nice towards males. Nah, not to worry.

It probably WILL happen. Don't fall for it.

When it does happen, just relax and pull in your horns for a while. Take a breather and smile ironically. But keep your eyes open. Watch like a hawk. Scrutinze the pleasant "mask" for the crack that eventually WILL appear. And when it appears....pounce on it! Wedge your fingers in that crevice and rip the mask clean off the face. Mercilessly.

What about the $500,000 that was being made available to hold special screenings to the judiciary, etc.

Some kind of special look should be given to examining the funding of such bigotry, prejudice and inflamatory work ! Surely this is criminal ?

In England, we have a Charity Comission that purports to oversee the workings of charitable bodies . . do you have something similar

Does anyone know how much Federal funds, or YOUR tax dollars, go to PBS each year? A note to your budget cutting happy Congressional representative would be in order.

And who are their corporate sponsors? A note to any large corporate sponsor asking if they support the views of BTS might be a good tactic to use.
