MSN Reports Dangerous Jobs - No Mention of Men
posted by Matt on 09:09 AM September 20th, 2005
The Media Well it's great they did it, an article on the most dangerous jobs. The author conveniently neglects to mention that the vast majority of those in these lines of work are men.

When I see these omissions, I write the source to let them know that 93% of workplace fatalities are suffered by men, and only 7% are suffered by women.

I also ask the rhetorical question - what do you think would happen if the numbers were reversed. How would you have reported the story then?

the numbers for '04 are 93% to 7%.

I think the numbers for a previous year was 92% to 8%

You're right. It's 93%. I don't recall where I got 92%. Thanks for pointing that out.

Just checked that out, AU. I see that 24% of female occupational deaths (all 411 of them as opposed to over 5000 for men) are murders.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see some biased women's commission throw together something like: "Given a man and a woman, each having died on the job, the woman is two and a half times as likely to have been murdered!"

Absolutely correct. Adam Jones writes about the unequal journalistic treatment of gender in war and the workplace.
