Men, Depression, and Genetics

Men's Health While searching on other matters (I wanted to know linguistic roots of the word "sanguine"), I came across this document (.pdf format). [For those of us who prefer to avoid opening .pdf documents, the HTML version of it can be had here].

The author is very careful to point out he is only identifying correlational factors, not necessarily causative factors, in his report. Nonetheless, there is still good food for thought here on several fronts and fodder for exploration.

Matt,

Thanks for posting on this important topic.

I read the entire lecture, and I can only say that if this was delivered at an 8:00AM class, I guarantee 85% of the students were comatose by slide no. 3.

I challenge anyone to summarize what this Psyc. Prof. tried to say, in one sentence.

As close as I could guess, he argues that "if you're a man, and your mom's father died early, then you are likely to experience depression at some point in your life.... maybe."

Also, men who never go to shrinks and don't take Prozac are happier than men who do.

And, by association, tall black men have more NBA contracts than short white ones, except for the team's owners.

"Major depression & high levels of neuroticism as correlated to length of maternal grandfather life & by survey of tranqalizer use shorten life expectancy, but not as much as contact with the psychiatric profession or use of psychiatric medicines for time intervals above 1 month of duration."

I'm pretty sure this quote cites four factors that lead to early mortality.

(i.e. (1)grandfather dies too young; (2)you took tranquilizers; or (3)took other anti-depressants for more than one month; or (4) you met a psychiatrist.)

The worst one is meeting a psychiatrist, right?

Because that leads automatically to 2,and 3 above, and a likely diagnosis of No. 1.

Happy?

Well, how do YOU feel about that?

Assuming you're not in the profession of witch-doctors?
