I remember when Hillary Clinton claimed that the primary victims of war were women when vast numbers of men were killed. The reasoning was that the emotional hardship, responsibility for children and financial hardship were far worse than being the selfish workshy male who was killed.
We now have a natural disaster where larger numbers of women were killed than men. Whadda ya know? Women are the primary victims of this disaster, and the women survivors need special treatment (due to Oxfam assigning the innuendo of sexual and physical abuse in the large refugee camps to male survivors).
It is so transparent that double standards exist over these things, but as usual, people in the media are far too scared to point out this type of hypocrisy.
It should be noted that one of the reasons so many men survived relative to women was that they were WORKING, either further inland or out at sea where the waves did not have the same effect.

Countries/regions that have traditions of polygamy usually started those traditions because war killed so many men (I hear Islam got it's polygamy from this). In areas of Africa, polygamy started because so many men were taken as slaves.

Folks, have a look at the photo in the article -- the women there look well over 80!
I'd contend that more women than men were killed because there were fewer men around to begin with, them having mostly been killed by the ravages of life that ensure that among the elderly, the general population contains many more women than men.
Where was the BBC when storms and accidents took these islands' males while they were still young?

During the First World War women fought for the Vote. This was after combing the streets to hand out white feathers to the men who had not yet been killed !
Strangely, they did not campagain for equality in being conscripted and sent to the front ?
Truly, the impact on women - of all these men being killed or maimed - was huge.

On the First World War theme, BBC television are currently showing "The Great War", a series on WW1. Last week they had a programme on the women who went to work in the munitions factories. To boost production , a bonus system was produced linking pay to the number of shells produced. As a result the women cut corners and didn't waste time packing the right amounts of explosives in the shells. Vast amount of dud shells were shipped off to the front. Shells with too much explosives exploded prematurely in the gun barrells , wreaking carnage among the artillery crews. Shells with too little explosives didn't explode at all, so advancing companies were mown down by German machine gun posts left intact by the ineffectual barrage. Still, every cloud has a silver lining as those women found out....as they went laughing all the way to the bank with their bloated pay cheques.

I recall Mensactivism did a story on women as victims of Tsunamis before the big Tsunami hit that region in December. Following feminist logic it sure looks like Mensactivism must be causing these Tsunamis by talking about them before they happen. The anecdotal evidence is just overwhelming. Is there no end to what the Patriarchy will conspire to do???
