Misandrist Domestic Violence legal decision
posted by Matt on 06:29 PM February 16th, 2005
Inequality Ray Blumhorst writes "A man who had his leg knocked out from under him in an act of domestic violence committed by a woman, doesn't have "standing" to sue for shelter services for men.

"What a strange (and cruel) irony in the use of that word (standing) from the English language," says Ray Blumhorst."

I know that I don't have anywhere NEAR your legal savvy, but this quote bothered me and I have come up with an answer that defies the "duluth model" B.S.

"If they think there needs to be more services for abused men, we support that, but the way they are going about it is wrong," Fukuroda said, citing the dangers that could come with allowing men into facilities geared specifically for battered women.

Ok, so if men in women's shelters are the problem, then explain this: If, by definition, the problem is having men in women's shelters, due to the "primary aggressor" mentality, then does that mean that lesbians can only have men around.

I mean, follow it logically: in lesbian relationships a woman is the primary aggressor. It then follows that only men can render treatment and support as her fear of her "primary aggressors" (women) cannot be allowed to tend to her.

but, and this is critical:
1) are the shelters that admit lesbian DV victims wholly staffed by men?

2) If not does this not show that the gender of both other residents and staff is not in conflict with treatment/fellow-residents/staff?

3) Therefore any program that provides services to lesbians is placing them in the same situation as the DV industry says women cannot be allowed to enter into if men were provided shelter.

And ...............

As I recently concluded on a feminist board: if men are PAYING for 1/2 the services in taxes for women only shelters, why then can men not RECEIVE 1/2 the services from FEDERALLY funded shelters?

I don't know if this has been addressed before, but I hope it is of service.

BTW, Ray, you are one courageous man.

And I don't say that often.

Be well my friend.
