New breed of consumers?
posted by Adam on 03:40 PM January 3rd, 2005
News Linucs writes "From the Guardian: "'Young women now drive the decisions on what to buy and, unlike older women, it is she, and not her boyfriend or husband, who decides how much to spend,' said Young." That looks fine, as long as she spends her own money... "But Joanna is playing hard to get. She may be the darling of the corporations, but, despite her education and strong opinions, she has left the politicians confounded by her reluctance to vote." - And what will happen to the dumb, uneducated men? "'Young women are the great untapped power in today's society: it is not an exaggeration to say future democracy relies on engaging their voices and their votes in a way we have so far failed to do,'" - Big idea: let's place some voting booths inside Body Shop. "'The feminisation of the high street has been so pronounced in the last five years that men are being chased away: your average heterosexual man feels completely out of place on the high street now,' said Experian's Patrick Gray. 'It is only "feminised men", or metrosexual man, who dares to face it. Most men prefer the internet to real-life shops now.'" - I surely feel out of place while reading The Guardian..."

For 3 or 4 decades the square footage of retail flooring has been 7 to 10 times greater for women's products than for men's. This because when she is spending it is largely for herself, and, when he is spending, it is largely for her ! The retailers have long recognised this. That Houseware shops are becoming ever more feminized, is to some extent playing catch-up and catering to all those women who have elected to live without a man, albeit in his former home and/or on his money ! ! !

The above evidently leaves the men with no proper home to equip and decorate, nor the money to perhaps improve their hovel ?

I'm bored to tears with these types of articles - a feminist fantasy where women are the future power, the only citizens that matter and all based on a few interviews with a couple of "marketing" nobodies, a womens' rights advocate and a couple of female writers with an agenda. Any article which reports the "wage gap" so uncritically has absolutely no credibility at all.

In actual fact, in the UK, there is a study on Gendered Spending called "The gendering of spending within households". This focused on over 3500 couples, so does not refer to single males or females, but there are patterns which probably reflect the types of things we buy.

For example, from the study:

Women spent more than men on food, women's and children's clothes, child care and educational courses. Men spent more than women on alcohol, motor vehicles, repairs to the house, meals out, gambling and holidays. The balance between men and women in spending was more even when it came to household goods, medical and dental expenses, tobacco and recreation.

So, why do most car adverts in the UK follow the clever woman/stupid man syndrome? Because they're trying to attract women and they believe they're a big "untapped" market. Bit of a slap in the face for all these nasty men who are currently buying the products.

Alcohol advertising frequently follows this mode of advertising too, and the surge of Alcopop (sweet pop based alcoholic fizzy drinks) products is apparently to encourage women to drink more. Pubs are being told they're too macho and male dominated and certain big chains are designing "female friendly" bars.

I understand the non gender related logic of increasing your market share, however, when your advertising, spokepersons and public pronouncements belittle your original core market, then these companies deserve any reaction they get from men.

Men spend more on household repairs? Hmmmm, wonder why the 2nd biggest home improvement chain in the UK has a series of adverts where the man is a complete fool (Neil Morrissey) and the female spends most of her time rolling her eyes at him and showing how to do things.

I'm bored about reading how women are the most important voters, have the most money, buy the most houses, are going to buy more cars, alcohol and slippers and condoms and mouthwash and dog kennels and fish food than us....have one night stands because they're emancipated, but we're mindless dogs when we do it etc etc etc.

I just wonder when it's all going to happen - after all, we've been hearing these things for the last 20 years. All the time, men just soldier on (literally) keeping the world moving and creating the environment to allow these women to "achieve".

I could not agree more. Who are the damn engineers, scientists etc. that make shit happen in the world? Men of course. How many female engineers has anyone encountered? In my 54 years I have met one.
And who the hell wants these worthless bullshit corporate papershuffling jobs most women hold. I happen to be male and actually have a professional degree myself. (BS Accounting,Florida State University)done the job bullshit and all. I cannot speak for anyone else but the women can have my previous jobs, I am now successfully self employed, designing my own products, marketing them and manufacturing. I have no female competition here, they are all holding these cushy corporate jobs where they should be. If any of these women dare to step into my turf they will be ripped up by the pitbulls. So they are where they need to be, sitting on their big fat asses in front of a computer all day at some corporation doing some bullshit job that's probably not necessary in the first place.

Same here Pete. I am successful engineer cranking out products and charging a premium for them. I have worked at corporations in the past that hire these women that sit at computers doing nothing, but sooner or later these corporations go broke - because the competition is from guys like us with small operations and zero overhead on the hunt. The law of jungle stills applies.

That's right. And who do they call if the computer crashes? I am one of those (also self employed).
