Slate's response to Washinton Post DV articles
posted by Matt on 05:57 PM December 21st, 2004
The Media Anonymous User writes "Jack Shafer, who is editor-at-large for Slate magazine, writes a decent analysis of pregnancy murder statistics in response to the Washington Post's sexist policies. As you all know, the Post has been arguing for the VAWA act, without arguing for changes that would provide adequate and comparable services to male victims of domestic violence. The Post is creating news at a time where there would otherwise be none, designed to coincide with politicians' push to re-fund VAWA. The Post continues to neglect the problem of female-on-male DV."

Check this out. Well, who knows what sort of staff changes will occur now... hope Jack gets to keep his job! Suppose he knew about the sale?

Anyway, I wish in his response he had discussed the fact of the one-sidedness of the Post's reporting. Pointing out that they had used hysteria tactics was good, but failing to point out the other hald of the DV story (ie, men getting murdered, beat up, false accusations, etc.) was a big omission. Oh well, glad he even did as much as he did.

The big lie in the Post articles on the murder of pregnant women is that the articles try to stir up fear among women to believe that pregnancy is some sort of extra dangerous time. This is simply bullshit. Even if you use the stats that the article supplies the per capita murder rate for pregnant females in the worst scenario they presented was 1 in 12,000. That is, one pregnant woman out of 12,000 pregnancies is murdered. The national average for murder is 1 person murdered out of 15,600 people. That's pretty close.

The post simply leaves this little stat out of the article. Duh. Their bias is glaring. They are trying to use emotion/fear to sway public opinion and should be called on it.
