UK: Women MPs bullied in Commons!
posted by Adam on 01:38 PM December 7th, 2004
News Linucs writes "More news from UK: women get "bullied and abused" in Commons. "When scores of young female MPs arrived in the Commons in 1997, Labour's Claire Curtis-Thomas assumed the red ribbons tied to coat hangers were for Aids day, only to be told they were for members to hang up their swords. Another new MP, Yvette Cooper, found it hard to persuade Commons officials that she was an MP, not a researcher or secretary."

This is standard stuff - get this one: "But the research suggests that Britain's politics have been dramatically changed by the arrival of more female MPs." - say what? - "Commons' hours have been made more "family friendly", and childcare and domestic violence have become important concerns for parliament."

Maybe F4J didn't notice that the Commons have been made more FAMILY FRIENDLY? (makes you wonder...)"

Get a load of some of the stuff they are claiming. Sounds like an example of the good old-fashioned false-accusations-en-masse in an effort to wrest privileges and concessions from male colleagues.

I imagine we'll see the same tactic here in the US now that it's been disclosed (though it has already been used here in the US in the business world as well as to a degree in political bodies). But to what end? Win power in committees, etc., via bullying the male members? Seems like it might be the motivation. If you can get your male colleagues to fear you in terms of accusations of one or another kind in the public sphere, you can get the upper hand in political matters in the committee room!

Watched Conservative MP Anne Widdecombe give the alleged victim an earful on TV this morning and noted that the alleged victim said that they had got their revenge but didn't mention what it was.

The report is very old btw, written in 1997.

What a joke. I would love to see all those male MPs get up and start yelling "I'm a man! I am a human being! I should NOT be treated under law as a sperm bank and a walking wallet!" But those male MPs aren't bullies, they're wimps. And women's donkeys.

How does the presence of a red ribbon to hang your sword on constitute bullying? I'm a man, and I don't have a sword either. The Palace of Westminster is a historic building, it is a few centuries old. What crap is this?

So, because Parliament is now more woman-friendly, that means it is more 'family-friendly'? Since the 19th century, feminists have been trying to appropriate the family as their political domain, and this seems like another example of that. As another writer said, ask F4J whether they think it is family friendly.

What is all this stuff about 'family friendly' hours anyway? Why on earth should Parliament only work family friendly hours? So you want to run the government, but only as long as it doesn't get in the way of little Johnny's football practise? It sounds like you're not taking the job seriously. What would have happened in 1940 if Churchill had had to go home at 6:00 every night to put his kids to bed? The self-indulgence of these people is unbelievable.

This is governing the country, it is not working in a flower shop. If you're not able and willing to put the hours in to do the job, then move aside and let someone else do it.

Feminism will continue as long as there is money to be made from hating men.
