Police Use Tazer on 6-YO Boy
posted by Matt on 04:01 PM November 12th, 2004
Boys/Young Men I wonder if the police would have done the same thing had a 6-YO girl been behaving this way? I can only imagine what sort of effects this will have on him, as clearly he is already very disturbed by something going on in his life and/or mind. I wonder if the officers will even get into any serious trouble for what they did? Now contrast the concern for his well-being as compared to the concern for this girl's, both appearing as links on CNN's home page as of this writing. Would these stories be written the same way had the sexes been reversed? You bet they would not have.

Perhaps a little off subject...but when I read this my mind flashed back to one of the worst days of my life. I was looing after my three year old common-law stepson while momma was gone to a doctor's appointment. Mother common-in-law came over with something she had found cleaning out her attic. It was one of those purse toting weapons for women that shoots tear gas pills that momma had bought the last time she was in the States. I thought...Oh great...these things are highly illegal in Canada, but i was too busy to toss it in the harbour just across the street. It was entirely plastic and looked just like a toy....not good. I placed it on top of a high shelving stack, well out of reach of 3 year old. A nine year old neighbour from the flat downstairs came for a visit and to play. I went to the kitchen to get a platter of cheese and crackers and some kool-aid...just as momma was arriving in the door....no kidding...it wasn't even a matter of 30 seconds...9 year old had discovered the "toy"and shot 3 year old in the face at close range with it. There was a paniced rush to the local medical clinic...try as I may I could not make myself put my lips on his for CPR when they were saturated with tear gas.

The doctor in charge of the clinic was a woman...she was Irish...as soon as we walked in she sniffed and said "I haven't smelled that since home...tear gas"...she very calmly cleaned the little boy up...as she was doing it she giggled and said "Now don't you and your hooligan friends be out there throwing rocks at the Tommies" she then smiled in the most reassuring way and said "sad to say but this is just household first aid where I come from"

Don't get me wrong, there is endless prejudice against men and boys. And MANN has done a great job proving that fact.

But unless I missed something here, aren't we trying too hard to find sexism by comparing these two articles? Granted, the use of a stun gun on a 6 year old -- even one who is inflicting self-harm -- seems a bit much. And there MIGHT be a case that they wouldn't have used one on a girl, but it's a mighty tenuous argument.

But what does the "ice through the roof" article have to do with sexism? That article objectively reported on an incident where ice fell to earth and slammed into the bedroom of a 7 year old girl. Facts. Story. Period. I didn't see ANY gender bias in the article; no "ice used to abuse daugther", or "Falling Ice: Evil Patriarchy's New Weapon Against Women", or even a hint of "girls have it so bad, boo-hoo".

Sorry, I just don't see any gender-bias problem here. Let's not turn into "We See Sex Discrimination Everywhere" zombie nut jobs [picture of strange, wacked-out face here].

We'd start looking like feminists.

I'm more concerned about what would make a 6 year old child go off so severely that it would even warrant a stun gun. ANY child, I don't care the age, has to be stunned, and you've got one terribly troubled child.
But a stun gun on a 6 year old boy?! Where does THAT come from? You're gonna tell me a 6 year-old boy could have it in his head to be such a threat to ANYONE much less himself, that grown cops saw the need to stun him??? The kid would have had to have been foaming at the mouth with rabis. I just can't see it.
If ever a story warranted a follow-up, this is the story.

What kind of home life does this poor boy have thathe would coe to school and do this. WHY was he trying to harm himself? WHo taught him that harming himself would get attention? What was he asking for?

All I can say is that this article did NOT tell enough.

Yeah, can't TWO COPS restrain a 6 year old without the need for a stun gun?

I'm not sure it is a story about sex discrimination, but it seems to be a story about unnecessary police brutality.

Feminism will continue as long as there is money to be made from hating men.

But what bothers me is this: the 12 year old was running into traffic and the officer could have been hurt. But they are going to discipline him.

THAT'S BULLSHIT.

The point is that we treat boys like shit. We cut off half of their penile skin without asking, just because we feel like it, and we're equally entitled to tazer them, when the urge strikes us. That's what makes us American!

Yes, so that by the time they become men they are accustomed to being treated like shit. Thus men feel it is "normal" for them to be second class citizens, and they cannot conceptualise that they should have equality with women. Thus they regard men like us (who DO believe in equality) as some sort of nutcases.
