Domestic Violence Coalition sued
posted by Adam on 09:06 AM September 19th, 2004
Domestic Violence Ray Blumhorst writes "The Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men (DAHM) and a person identified as John Doe have filed suite against the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence here. The news article quotes "Andy" Slater (who is representing DAHM) as saying, "The Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men wants to assist battered men and their children with the same ability that the nine coalition members do with women and their children," Slater goes on to say, "It appears on its face that the coalition is drawing a distinction and stating that women and children deserve more protection than men." At the risk of repeating himself Ray Blumhorst asks yet again, "Would You Help A Domestic Violence Shelter That Helps Men?" here and especially here. It appears "on its face" that the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence has a hearing problem, or even worse a prejudice against men problem."

Contradiction, anyone? (Score:1)

Roberts, who was not hired until October 2002, said Thursday that representatives of the men's help line were mailed an application to join the coalition in the summer of 2002, but to her knowledge never returned it. She said that the group was never denied membership because it was never considered for membership.

OK, first Kimberly Roberts says that the men's group was mailed an application to join the coalition in the summer of '02, then she says they were never even considered for membership.

So which is it? Am I interpreting those two statements wrong? Am I seeing a contradiction that really isn't there?

I think that what she means is that applicants cannot be considered until they have turned in an application. It's like a job; you can't claim an establishment refused to hire you because of discrimination if you never put in an application in the first place. Of course they didn't hire you - you never applied!

Sending a potential applicant an application by no means suggests that they are considering you. Only when you have returned it can they consider you. What she said makes sense, though I didn't read the rest of the article.

I thought I heard elsewhere (another source) that someone at DAHM returned that application. Of course assuming that is the case, and DAHM presents proof the application was sent, the Maine Coaltion may still try to find some other way out.

I suspect this legal issue will go on for some time. I am pleased (overjoyed) to see yet another case where people are asking for accountability from the domestic violence industry.

Does anyone remember a TV movie made about five years ago (perhaps more) starring Judith Light about a wife who physically and mentally abused her husband? Memories are vague, but she played this trailer-bound wife who was consumed by jealousy and mistrust with regards to her husband, and she would fly into rages and attack him. It seemed to have it all: the inaction and indifference of the police, the threats made by her to turn the tables and claim victimhood if he sought help...if I remember correctly she ends up killing the guy. Does anyone remember this one?

I checked Amazon and couldn't find it available there. I'd like to see it. I'd guess it's not real popular in Hollywood given the feminist dislike for perspectives on domestic violence like this.
