They always carried the Fair share of load. They acated as providers and protectors and women acted as nurturers.
As far as carrying mom for six thousand kilometers is concerned it is more like a publicity stunt and public show of love and affection and purely a modern phenomenon of "pomp and show". It is neither mandated or requested by the scriptures though this stunt was probably inspired by Shravan Kumar who conducted the similar pilgrimage in the epic "Ramayana" and he did for both mom and dad and not just for one Gender. To an extent it reflects the carrying the load for the good done by the parents in the childhood. In modern times we are now learning to devalue the men and their contributions.
Yes men had to carry the load from from ancient times and have been uncomplainingly doing it, doing the more strenious and dangerous work and leaving the fun parts like bringing up the children for the women. If bringing up a child were not rewarding wouldn't women give the the custody of the cvhild to the father the moment he asked for it.

"t's about time men started to carry their fair share of the load."
Great, I would love to put down some of my load and do as little as women do. I've been overburdened for fat to long compared to the light load that women carry"
