Cable "Public Service" Announcement
posted by Adam on 09:32 AM August 12th, 2004
The Media Bledso writes "A website called ControlYourTV.com felt the need to explain to us how we can set up parental controls on our remote controls. Naturally, the best way to do this is to make a man look as impotent as possible, especially around his wife and daughter. This is the "Public Service" announcement. It's called "Debbie & Dad". here"

I actually saw this commercial on TV, and it kind of baffled me. So, we have this scenario where the husband is perfectly content discussing this channel in the middle of the day with his 10-ish daughter and wife. So, we can assume that the channel isn't "Playboy" or "DIAL X FOR SEX NETWORK" or anything... so...

1) Why is the mother blocking it?
a) Perhaps this is some kind of sports channel, and represents the common stand for women's independence and rights by depriving men of enjoyable activities.

2) Why won't the mother unblock it for the husband?
a) Even if she did block a channel to "shield" the poor children from sex and violence and naughty words, why wouldn't she unblock it for the husband?
a.5) Two very different tones are going on here... the husband is clearly nonchalant, while the wife is VERY indignant, like the husband just asked her for a monkey.
b) Ignoring assumed household positions, the wife should unblock (or explain how to unblock) the channel the husband wants to watch, out of common courtesy.

But, of course, this is a well-known feminist tactic, where the woman is superior because she holds frivolous and unimportant power over the man's head just to be cruel.

The man or the woman?

The man doesn't really appear to be a dolt, although maybe he's uninformed. I've seen plenty of commercials where the man is two to five times as stupid as the fellow in this commercial.

The man, however, does appear to be a prisoner in a female-domainated household. The wife in this commercial is a tyrant and the man is her prisoner. His daughter is following in the mother's footsteps.

Really, this commercial speaks volumes about the controlling nature of women.

It's a pity, because the man is probably paying for the cable subscription. His wife's probably not putting out, and she certainly wouldn't want to let him watch something sexual.

If I were a decent woman, I'd be irate over this commercial. I mean, they are portraying the female sex as bitchy and controlling, when females are supposedly the ones who are understanding and lovers of personal freedom. Of course, most women are blind to how controlling and tyranical their gender really can be at times.

I do feel bad for the man in this commercial, but only because he's so p-whipped.

Of course, it's not all good news here. The general consensus among the population is that women have the right to dominate and control men, but it is a crime if the dymanic is reversed.

All I can say is that if I ever ended up with a woman like that, I'd be heading for the hills.

According to the DV Nazis the woman (if she were a man) is a "batterer". Yep, playing music too loud, interferring with her T.V. time, or any other controlling behavior is a symptom of a "batterer" ... but only if SHE is a HE.

I wonder how the commercial would have played if HE had said "no" (gasp) to HER. OMG, a patriarchal knuckledragger who does "Goddess-knows-what-else" to his "slave".

i saw that comercial and thought the same thing.here's a guy so stupid, that his daughter and wife have to instruct him how to watch tv,or who is allowed to control what he watches.there is a reason guys don't watch tv anymore, and it's driving the ad exec's nuts.but they portray men as incredibly stupid and wonder why we don't watch their crap.let the feminazi's watch it.

Isn't there any way to boycott this commercial? It really steamed me when I saw it the first time, let alone the twentieth. They're running it to DEATH over here. When will commercials quit trying to be funny by making people look like incompetent fools and just start advertising their services/messages?!
