The Draft Please visit http://www.stopthedraft.com/ . You will have access there to articles that have been published re the US gov't's plans to reinstate the draft. Visit http://thomas.loc.gov/ and type "national service" in the search box and hit "Search". The first two hits will be the two bills on the House and Senate describing the "National Service" plan to make all 18-to-25-year-olds required to perform "national service" for two years, presumably mostly military service but also other kinds as determined by the authorities. While these bills make females subject to the draft, they also allow the gov't to determine how people will serve the country, either in military or non-military roles. You can be quite sure that women will not be required to don uniforms in the same number as men, nor will they be required/expected to go into combat. Do you think any of these coffins hold women, and if they do, do they hold nearly as many women as men? If men do not stand up against this, it is us who will lose our own lives, freedoms (what we have of them), and watch our sons, nephews, and grand-sons have to deal with this situation. If we do not stand up for ourselves, who will?

Those of us with teen-aged children/relatives need especially to be very concerned with this development, as well as anyone under the age of, I'd say, 22. There is bi-partisan support for this in the Congress and the only person of administrative rank and real policy influence in the current administration who really opposes it is Sec'y of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, only because he feels conscripts are more trouble than they are worth. But he can be persuaded and I predict he will be as long as US military retention rates drop and morale sags, and/or the war in Iraq continues to get more intense. I predict the vote on the two "National Service" bills will come at latest in January 2005, perhaps before then (but after November when the elections are over). Both GW and John Kerry have endorsed this idea. Historically when the president has asked for conscription, he has gotten it. Both of the major candidates support it. It will happen - unless the people make it clear it won't be tolerated. Please get busy with this, contacting your legislators on state and federal levels (use http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/ to look up contact info.), if you do not want to see young Americans forced to serve in the armed forces. If you do, then do nothing, for most assuredly it will happen if you don't.

The Draft: Bush v. Kerry (Score:0)

I'm not posting this to start a flame war, but there have been discussions here on how men's rights is playing a role in presidential politics. People generally seem to agree that neither Bush nor Kerry is in any way male-affirming, but that Kerry as a Democrat is more beholden to feminists.

Well, the draft is another issue where the candiates seem to strongly differ: Bush and his hawkish administration will probably have no problem ramming a draft through, but Kerry as a draft opponent and opponent of the Iraq war clearly would not.

Now, as a male of draftable age, I think this weights heavily on my decision this fall. As an independent voter who dislikes both parties, I believe a vote for Kerry could literally be a vote for my own life, and the lives of other young men.

What gave you the impression that it is the Bush administration that wants this draft. Or that the reason for this push is because it is "hawkish"?

Here is a link to Neal Boortz' website giving details that give a completely different reason and origin for this drive to reinstitute the draft. Note the comment that military volunteer numbers are NOT suffering.

Who Must Register with Selective Service?

“Almost all male U.S. citizens, and male aliens living in the U.S., who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service.”

“Women Aren't Required to Register”

"Here's why:"

“THE LAW
Selective Service law as it's written now refers specifically to "male persons" in stating who must register and who would be drafted. For women to be required to register with Selective Service, Congress would have to amend the law.”

“Because women are excluded by policy from front line combat positions, excluding them from the draft process remains justifiable in DoD's view.”

“THE SUPREME COURT
The constitutionality of excluding women was tested in the courts. A Supreme Court decision in 1981, Rostker v. Goldberg, held that registering only men did not violate the due process clause of the Constitution.”

“Registration is the law. A man who fails to register may, if prosecuted and convicted, face a fine of up to $250,000 and/or a prison term of up to five years.
Even if not tried, a man who fails to register with Selective Service before turning age 26 may find that some doors are permanently closed.”

“DISABLED MEN
Disabled men who live at home must register with Selective Service if they can reasonably leave their homes and move about independently. A friend or relative may help a disabled man fill out the registration form if he can't do it himself”

“STUDENT FINANCIAL AID
Men, born after December 31, 1959, who aren't registered with Selective Service won't qualify for Federal student loans or grant programs. This includes Pell Grants, College Work Study, Guaranteed Student/Plus Loans, and National Direct Student Loans.”

“If Congress and the President were to reinstate a military draft, Selective Service procedures currently in place would not treat married registrants, or those with a dependent child, any differently from men who are single.”

“CITIZENSHIP
The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) makes registration with Selective Service a condition for U.S. citizenship if the man first arrived in the U.S. before his 26th birthday.”

“FEDERAL JOB TRAINING
The Workforce Investment Act (formerly called the Job Training Partnership Act - JTPA) offers programs that can train young men for jobs in auto mechanics and other skills. This program is only open to those men who register with Selective Service. This applies only to men born after December 31, 1959.”

"FEDERAL JOBS
A man must be registered to be eligible for jobs in the Executive Branch of the Federal government and the U.S. Postal Service. This applies only to men born after December 31, 1959."

“...many states have enacted legislation which links SSS registration with the process of applying for a driver's license or state identification card.”

“Contrary to popular belief, "only sons," "the last son to carry the family name," and "sole surviving sons" must register and they can be drafted. However, they may be entitled to a peacetime deferment if there is a military death in the immediate family.”

What's really disheartening about all this is that the US Supreme Court has already ruled against drafting women. The argument was a study in circularity: well, if Congress has already considered the needs of the military when constructing the draft and "since women are excluded from combat service by statute or military policy," then women should be exempt from the draft. You'll notice they never question that "statute or military policy." Whatever happpened to interpreting the constitution? To protect women, the constitution as well as common sense goes out the window. A typical decision by typically traditional chivalrous male judges.

I would could this be revisited under the 14th Amendmment?

Sadly, we are still a nation that talks about equal justice, then hypocritically showers women with privileges and men with responsibilities. If men have trouble meeting their responsibilities they are met with penalties and punishments, but if women are dissatisfied with their privileged lives (and rebel in illegal ways) they obviously need social services to help them.

Slaves/males (on the other hand) must sacrifice right up to the point of death for the sake of precious women. All this is according to the established social order of the American (western world) system. In addition men must make privileged women happy, or suffer the stigma and punishment of being an abuser, for daring to emotionally abuse a bored housewife or girlfriend.

It's not easy being a man, but we are conditioned to "shut up and take it like a man" from our earliest childhoods, so few people will ever speak up about all the male abuse. Women are naturally more sensitive (we believe) and are role conditioned to express their wants and feelings as a matter of course. If you have any doubts about the later just ask any woman what she's thinking and watch the flood gates open to an endless torrent of expectations, wants, and demands. After all, they've just been dying to tell you all the things they think you should know about them. Men on the other hand are just dying (no questions asked).

It’s all just the natural order of things in 21st century feminazi america, where 30 years of women’s liberation have created the massive gender inequity that is so apparent today.
