Inequality Matt writes "Got an email from careerbuilder.com advertising a WomenForHire (www.womenforhire.com) event in the DC area. Immediately my blood pressure went up. Do they do MenForHire conferences? No. Calls to their office at (212) 580-6100 nets one a less-than-ideal response. Comments, they say, are taken via e-mail at jami@womenforhire.com. Let them know what you think of their sexist ways. Would "MenForHire" or "WhitesForHire" stand a chance of going unchallenged? Why let this go unchallenged?"

This stuff drives me up the wall, too. But I think calling or writing an email to Tory (or whoever) is a waste of time. The woman who started this is on the same gender crusade as all the women's studies majors of the last 20 years, fighting discrimination by discriminating. You can't communicate with a woman who has surrendured her mind.

I'm wondering if such a group is illegal but tolerated for now because of PC. Can we also have "menforhire" conferences that exclude women? I don't know, but I doubt it, and if we did I also doubt that any corporations would sign up. I don't see a requirement on the "jobseekers" application for gender, so in theory a man could send in a resume, which is the usual maneuvre to escape lawsuits. But good luck to any man trying to get hired through "womenforhire."

I am told that in California it is illegal to exclude people from otherwise public events or discounts or other give-aways based on indellible characteristics, incl. gender, ethnicity, height, etc.

They are holding an event in San Diego on Oct. 26. Hmm, I wonder if it would be possible to find a legal-system-based way to give them a hard time about it? Anyone out in Cali know about this?

Yeah, I remember bars in California getting sued because they had a "ladies night" which violated some anti-discrimination laws. So why would a "ladies only" job referral company be legal?

Someone with legal skills needs to step up and sue!

Wow, I can't believe that bars got sued for having "ladies night". That makes me happy. I wonder if the bars lost and had to pay. Does anyone know?

One idea is to seed womenforhire.com with some excellent resumes and see who responds. Then possibly add those companies to the boycott list.

Of course some level of fraud would be required, from fictitious resumes to passing males as females to simply an insincere job search...

I went ahead and posted my resume on their site. If they kick it out because I'm male, I'll just fire something appropriate right back.

And frankly, I would encourage anyone who has the inclination to start a "men's only" career program to mirror this one. Wish I had the time myself...

I don't think complaining to them will do squat, which is why I wish we guys could just start one of our own.

Also, the list of corporations supporting this makes my skin crawl (glad to see my company wasn't in the list).
