Changing the marathon times is ridiculous.
I am FROM Boston. I have RUN the marathon (and finished it, thank you very much). Putting the women up front is just posturing, no matter what they say. I'll prove it:
The reason the wheel chairs start first is becasue they are faster and finish first. If they had to start with the runners, they would be held up.
So, now, to make SURE a woman finishes first, they have the females start first. When the male and female elites start ... they start in front. If you want to give the ELITES a chance to start early, fine. But the male elites must still jostle, struggle, and get out of the pack. Why should it be different for women? OHhhhh, because according to gender feminazis for women to be equal they have to be given "help" I guess.
The fastest start first, are put up front, and that's how it is. The wheel chairs go first, then the elite runners (male and female) are up front, and from there it's up to individual training, talent, and intestinal fortitude on how you do. (I finished in about 4 hours - and couldn't walk right for 3 days, lol).
The ONLY purpose for this is so that a woman will "finish first". Nice. I don't see the "we just want equality" feminists asking for the MALE elite runners to be separated and get a start time. Why!? Because THEY would be placed in front of the females (the fastest are in front - see previous wheel chair comment) so as not to let slower runners slow them down in a pack.
Man, am I glad I am not in that state.

If I were a woman, I'd be offended. As you stated, it implies that women aren't as good as men athelete-wise, and as such, to compete in a "men's event", they must be given extra help and support. I'd be outraged and probably write an angry letter. I'd petition to have women boycott the event. It is an insult and implies women are weak, inferior, and need babying through how to run.
Then I'd reread the part about "extra help" and (eventually) process the fact that a woman is guaranteed to be the victor. And as such I'd put away the notepad.
Human greed is a great thing, isn't it?

I don't think women care HOW they win, just as long as they can have the prestige of "kickin' men's asses".

"...and the winner of the Boston Marathon... for the first time in at least 30 years, a WOMAN! Amazingly, she crosed the finish line almost TWO minutes before the first man crossed. When asked to comment on whether the victory should be counted, seeing as women were given a 25 mintue head-start, feminists around the country exclaimed their disgust at this statement. 'After all, womyn were given a head start of 25 minutes. For it to impact the results, a womin would have to have won by 25 minutes, right? What? What do you mean? Oh. Well... umm... RAAAAAAAAAAAAPEEEEEEE!'"

I compete in disc dog events. When I compete there has never been a separate men's division, although in the larger events there sometimes are. I compete with the men, and I do not get any special help. I wouldn't accept it. The fact is I can out throw probably 90% of men out there, and do not need a handicap to do so. If I get beat by a guy? Congrats to him. So far not many men have beat me. Or women. I have a kick ass dog.
Now I am thinking of entering the IDDHA nationals in distance, where the top people go to the ESPN Great Outdoor Games. I was very disappointed to hear there would not be a separate women's division, because that top 10% of guys I can't outthrow will be there. However, if I chose to go, I must simply train hard and do my best, and if I get beat I get beat. I would be utterly offended to get a handicap and then win. That is NOT winning.
This whole thing disgusts me. I think perhaps if the top men boycott the race and tell everyone why, perhaps things might change. I have yet to meet anyone who agrees with this.

For years after my ordeal at Mount Saint Vincent people would ask "why did yo attend?" or "Why didn't you just leave?" Well...it seemed like a good idea at the time and with every other campus in the area comming to the brink of a professor's strike it was the best I could do in a bad set of circumstances.
However...when you have a choice by all means vote with your feet. ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS.....AND A FLAT REFUSAL TO PARTICIPATE SPEAKS EVEN LOUDER!!!!
To any and all who find this insufferable drop out of the marathon and or re-locate out of the state AND MAKE IT NO SECRET WHY.
I had to do this when Quebec's separatists got in power...and when enough of us left and said flatly why...the tide turned.
If they find the competition unfair...don't compete and turn the whole thing into a sort of "feminist marathon" with no prestige for even having competed with real runners.

That was brilliant. And I agree with most of the posts here, gender norming in any of it's forms is idiotic and in no way 'proving' that a woman can do the same work.

If it is so important that women are treated differently in the race, they should have a Male-Only race, and a Female-Only race.
It is only fair.
