Birth control for men nearly here?
posted by Adam on 01:36 PM March 1st, 2004
News According to this article it says: "A new contraceptive for men has been developed - the biggest revolution in family planning since the launch of the Pill. Thousands of volunteers will begin testing the implant - which works by lowering sperm count with doses of the female hormone progesterone - this month. Experts are confident that the treatment will be almost 100 per cent effective and side-effect free, and predict it could be on the market in three years." Don't forget there's similar work happening in various countries on this as well.

Hallelujah!!!
Finally men will have some protection. Even condoms weren't reliable if a man could be held liable if a woman impregnated herself with the semen after the fact.

But since the pill will be ready in 3-5 years, we must work that much harder for reproductive rights. We have a deadline: once men have real birth control it will be harder to push for parental termination rights for unwanted pregnancies. The burden is on us even now when we have no reproductive options. In the future if a gold digging babe purposely gets pregnant, the atttitude will be, "Well, he should've been on the Pill."

Reproductive rights and anti-paternity fraud should still be a priority.

You think that sounds scary.

Think about the 0% chance of getting someone pregnant if you do not want to?

Think about all the penalties of the single parent household, which is supported by men.

Heck I am going to be supporting this one, and would even make a commercial for it.

Hey, you'll get no argument from me on the rationale for reproductive technology for men: I just think this one might not be the best one. Hormone therapy can cause side effects, including cancers. I just think RISUG sounds like a better, safer approach.

Personally I would be a little leery of any contraceptive that would involve injections or doses of a female sex hormone. It sounds like a great way to shrink the ol' package, as well as lower sperm counts.

Actually there was another recent report of a new male contraceptive technology that sounds much better (click link):

Oh, the female hormones not the injection! I've seen what happened to my wife when she took those hormones in her birth control pills, not pretty. Besides I'm already getting enough female hormones in the food I eat and the water I drink.

Yes of course lets take the female attempt to feminize men to the hormonal level.I dont think so.Over the last few decades scientists have been finding elevated levels of female hormones in the enviroment as a result of industrial pollution and they have also been finding undersized male genitals and other fertility problems in the fish and amphibian populations as a result of these elevated levels. This is not step forward.

I can clearly remember a dear friend in his early twenties being pressured into getting a vasectomy by his then girlfriend and a gaggle of her feminist friends...when he finally got a chance to speak he simply said "sterilizing ME is no garantee that SHE will not get pregnant!!" She got a sheepish look on her face as she HAD in fact been unfaithfull...topic of conversation suddenly changed.
