Female computer virus author arrested
posted by Adam on 09:46 AM February 24th, 2004
News Anonymous User writes "A female computer virus author in Belgium was recently arrested. Apparently, she was angered when a male anti-virus expert made a statement that most virus authors are male and she wanted to show that he was wrong. The virus author was also angered about comments that suggested stereotypes about virus authors."

First of all She says that the media always depicts hackers as male.
Well alot of them are, but I've seen many female hackers depicted in movies and TV shows. What's the difference? The diffrence is this, When ever a male hacker is depicted he is almost always a "bad guy". when a female hacker is depicted she is nearly always a "good guy".
In fact a good example springs to mind with the movie "JURASSIC PARK". In which a teenage girl played by Arrianna Richards (I think is her name) is a computer hacker and is, of course, depicted as a "Good guy". Get your facts straight, Gigabyte.
And secondly, It's a good thing that whenever women make sexist comments about men (which is all the time) we men, usualy, don't go around hurting others directly or indirectly just to "prove them wrong".

I put this on the Men's Hour Blog recently
Belgium woman virus writer arrested – proves women can write viruses – another great stride for feminism.

We know there are women terrorists, women murderers and women child abusers.
Now a female virus writer has been arrested…

There are women terrorists. See Classifying Terrorism It has a number of links and comments about women terrorists about half way down and Women terrorists: As deadly as her male partner

There are women murderers. See The black widows of Liverpool: Angela Brabin uncovers the gruesome tale of serial murder committed by a group of women in the poorest districts of 19th-century Liverpool. and Women murderers in Victorian Britain.(popular press' portrayal of women murderers during Britain's Victorian era)(includes bibliography) By Judith Knelman
This broadside, despite its levity, clearly articulates the attitude of the male establishment to women who threatened their dominance;

Even worse were women who killed in cold blood. Esther Hibner, who starved and otherwise abused her young needlework and weaving apprentices with the result that more than one of them died, was ridiculed by the press when she was tried and hanged in 1829. Eliza Ross, hanged in 1832 for smothering an old woman so that she could sell the body to an anatomist was (reasonably enough) reviled as subhuman.
This writer goes out of her way to agree that a woman who murdered an old lady was reasonably reviled as subhuman because in most of the rest of the article she’s telling us that women who murder are treated unfairly by the media. The list of newspaper articles and books excusing male murderers is as long as your arm, providing that you are a fish.

There are women child abusers The Sexual Abuse by Women of Children and Teenagers from the BBC programme Panorama (1997)
Women commit 25% of all child sexual abuse 250,000 children in UK have been sexually abused by women.
Now a female virus writer has been arrested.

Belgian virus writer arrested
A female Belgian virus writer who has been waging a very public and protracted war against Sophos anti-virus expert Graham Cluley has been arrested and charged by the authorities.

Over the past few years 'Gigabyte' has launched a number of viruses, all identified by a strong anti-Cluley theme. One launched a game on infected PCs which challenged readers to answer questions about the man the author had nicknamed 'Clueless'. Another game required infected users to knock Cluley's head off on a modified coconut shy.

If convicted of a charge of computer data sabotage, Gigabyte faces up to three years in prison and fines of up to €100,000. However, recent court cases involving virus writers and hackers suggest she may well escape with a more lenient sentence than the maximum.

The source of Gigabyte's discontent is comments made by Cluley some years ago when he claimed the majority of virus writers are male. Since then, Gigabyte has been on a mission to prove that females can cause just as much havoc as male virus writers.

Ironically it was that strong streak of the self-publicist in Gigabyte which ultimately led to her undoing. Carole Theriault, a security analyst at Sophos, said: "It is normally incredibly difficult to track down virus writers but when they start coming out and boasting about what they are doing they can often help us to find out where they are."
and from Gigabyte v Cluley: Seconds out, round four
Obsessive Belgian is back for more...

Gigabyte also rarely passed up an opportunity to slag off Cluley on her personal website and even contacted silicon.com last year to spark a war of words with the Sophos man claiming he "continues to talk shit about viruses".

Whatever it is about Cluley that has Gigabyte so angry has apparently yet to ease, because late last week she launched her latest attack. And this is where the rest of us find ourselves feeling like awkward hangers on to a conversation we'd really rather not be a part of.

We can all assume that virus writers don't like those working in the anti-virus field but what the aggrieved Belgian thinks she is achieving - other than confirming the stereotypes she claims to be attempting to debunk - is anybody's guess.
So it seems she set out to counteract “the majority of virus writers being male” and achieved nothing. She is still a minority. She also managed to get arrested, as have some male virus writers, although I wonder if she’ll get a lenient sentence. So she wants to be one of these women who have to prove how bad they are. Of course if you talk about terrible men you can name Hitler, Stalin, Ted Bundy, Jack the Ripper to name only four. If you name great men you can include Einstein, Newton, Churchill, Jesus Christ, Shakespeare and Martin Luther King. To name great women you can include Mother Teresa, Madam Curie, Florence Nightingale and Jane Austin. I sure feminists can name dozens more, but it is still low-key compared to some of the men, and no claiming oppression; I’m buying that as much as I bought weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and anyway women have been liberated for 30 years. Perhaps women should, if they want to claim they are the equal of men, try to do more great or good deeds, but that can be hard work. It’s often easier to be destructive than constructive, both verbally and literally.

If for macho reasons women want to suggest that they as bad as men, then perhaps we should believe them. That way we can treat women as true equals, equally responsible for their crimes, equally responsible for their failures, equally responsible for their situations, whether mothers or career women. Perhaps then female virus writers will get what they deserve, the same sentence as male virus writers. Perhaps.

I talked with one of the network security folks where I work (a large defense contractor) who said her code was clever, but not especially creative. I guess she just didn't have what she thought she had.

It's rumored that Gigabyte's fem-virus code did not adequately "penetrate" and exploit known port security vulnerabilities.

Must be a gender thang....
