Female school principal strikes boy's face

News Anonymous User writes "In January 2003, the female principal at a charter school struck a male student in the face. In court recently, she has entered a plea of no contest. It is said that she will likely get probation. The mother of the boy is not happy about the principal getting a light punishment; the parent removed her son from the school after the incident.

What kind of message does this incident send about the use of violence?"

I am of two minds about this. I want to know WHY she did it. On the one hand, as an adult who was regularly slapped in the face as a child, I find it the most disrespectful form of discipline and will never do it to my own children. On the other, we have been griping about teachers being unable to truly discipline the children, and boys especially need firm disciplining.

If the child told the principle to F- off, would it be more understandable? I guess it would depend on your opinion on physical punishment.

I don't know. I think maybe there is more to this than they are letting on. I am hesitant to make a judjement call.

Same suspicions here.

It seems odd that no mention is made of what the boy actually did to get whapped upside the butt.

I would say the same thing. I just pulled my 13 year old out of school. The kids were so out of control, the language and actions were completely unacceptable, yet very little was done about it. Kids today do things that even I, as an out of control teen , would not even think about. A girl punched a teacher in the face, and the same girl who my son was friends with was suspended for hitting a teacher. Girls are no better than the boys. If it were a girl I would say the same thing. The Biscuit Queen

Does anyone doubt that if a male principal slapped a female student, he would:

1) be immediately suspended, reprimanded, and ultimately fired by the School Board?
2) be charged with battery, and quite possibly assault?
3) face widespread community and media condemnation, the ruination of his reputation, and the likely end of his career as an educator?

Adults of either gender resorting to violence as a form of discipline for school infractions by students should not be excused or condoned.

The boy's parents have a slam-dunk lawsuit ready to file should they so choose.

You are right, I hadn't thought of that. A male teacher would have been fired if he hit a girl. Good point. The Biscuit Queen

I was slapped by my grade school principle as an eighth grade girl for declining to do more work assigned to me by a teacher than she assigned to other students. Nothing happened to her at all. Of course, that was nearly 20 years ago.
