Dumb Stereotypes Take Hope Out of Boys Hearts

News SMH journalist Andrew Block, who publicly states an interest in men's issues, wrote...

" John Marsden, the best-selling adolescents' fiction writer, and author of the non-fiction books Secret Men's Business and The Boy You Brought Home, said, "Teenage boys are among the most maligned group in our society ... "The media portrays them as either drug-crazed, illiterate, unemployable, suicidal, failures at school, sex criminals or vandals. So adults tend to treat them more suspiciously, and that causes them [unconsciously] to become angry or frustrated or alienated." The Advertising Standards Bureau, one of the few organisations that measures complaints about stereotypes in the media, reports a steady increase in the percentage of men (now more than a third) complaining about advertising, and their most frequent complaint is about sexual discrimination."

A survey conducted for the bureau last year revealed that while 40 per cent of complainants thought women were portrayed offensively, an increasing 23 per cent thought men were portrayed offensively.

I'm curious as to what kinds of images of women were considered "offensive". My guess is, mostly sex object depictions. I can see where some women would find those demeaning. However, at least when women are portrayed as sex objects, they're still being valued for something. Negative male stereotypes give men no redeeming value.

Sex discrimination is rampant in T.V. advertising, and the news media, as well as numerous other places. We live in an American society that treats men in such a hateful way that when men wake up every day, they do so with the knowledge that this evil country will commit hate crime against them before the sun sets, "just because they're male."

P. S. I saw a commercial and two different guests on the news that upset me with blatant sexist comments against men (all this evening).

Very true. I believe the effects are most devastating on male children and male teenagers. The object is the annihilation of all sense of gender pride , and that object has been achieved. I believe it to be the single most important factor behind the epidemic in male suicide.

As a teenager one of the experiences that made me most angry was frequent stops by the police. One evening was so bad I'll relate the story here.

I was looking for a car, my aged 1979 Honda Accord was rusting out, I couldn't even let people sit in the backseat, I was afraid it would fall through. So I drove around to various car dealerships along the main drag. In the course of the evening while slowing down to look at cars and getting out and carousing I was stopped not once, not twice, not three times, not four times, not even five times -- but six times by various jurisdictions of St Louis County Police. Now, I'm not black, I'm not terribly unusual looking, and looking at cars when the dealership is open is hardly an unusual behavior. I may have had on a beat up military style jacket, but that didn't stop salesmen from approaching and trying to get me to take a test drive. It did, however, seem to draw these cops like flies to rotting flesh.

Now, allegedly, someone was shooting car windows out on residental streets with a BB gun. But by the time the 6th cop stopped me I was pretty livid. I got out of my car having just pulled into the dealer lot and stormed over to his car cussing "You MFers have already stopped me 5 f'ing times tonight, you know who the hell I am, you've heard it over the god damn f'ing radio so many f'ing times now leave me the god damn f' alone you f'ing sons of bitches!". Now hows that for an introduction? I had reached a certain point of frustration where it's impossible to continue to be polite.

After that night I fully understood why black people get angry at cops.

It's not just teenagers but guys in their 20's as well. My recent interaction with the police was for not wearing a bicycle helmet, (while everyday I see little kids riding their bikes without helmets all over the place). The cop had to call in another cop car for backup for some reason, just to try to scare me, which I wasn't. They acted all mean and tough and raised their voices at me and were suprised to find out that I've never been arrested. It's interesting, I have a clean record yet police seem to act otherwise to me. All the intereactions with police have been negative and they've acted mean and authoritarian. I hate the police. I don't think they do any good, they've never helped me out and they certainly don't act like the community's servants as they claim to be. I'm white, male, and 25 years old, women my age do not seem to have such hatred for cops that other guys my age have. I could go on about cops but it would be a waste of time, I try my hardest to steer clear of them. Sometimes I feel like we live in a police state.

Ya know why women your age don't have as much of a problem with the cops? Because they wimper and cry and don't get tickets. They find them nice.

If I'm running, which I do frequently because I'm late all the time, I get stopped by cops wanting to make sure everything is okay. Cops have stopped my boyfriend and I walking around because I've looked "upset." They've glared at him while acting patronizing towards me. On one hand I guess it's good in case anything was wrong [like, if I was running from a bandit] but what if I decided to say "yeah, this jerk boyfriend has been smacking me"? bad, bad.

Are you sure you are a woman ?

I can't believe there are American women supporting men out there. I wish there were more women like you !
