could we also emphasise how unfair it is to men? Some years ago, the Indian Supreme Court confirmed the death penalty of 4 convicts (3 men, 1 woman)in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The three men were executed, but Indian president commuted the death penalty of Nalini - the female convict.

The State must stand for civility and justice rather than exemplify the antithesis as exemplified in the death penalty. By setting this example, it promulgates civility and justice through out a nation. That is why most Western nations have outlawed the death penalty.
That is why I signed the aforementioned petition.
There are a disproportionate number of males executed indicating socio-political-legal-cultural factors are responsibile for the same. Life without parole is the appropriate extreme criminal penalty in my opinion. C.V. Compton Shaw

I think it's somehwere around 800 something male executions and about 2 or 3. I might not have the exact numbers but it is something like that.
It is not only males who are disproportionately killed by the state but blacks are too.

From what I've read, in the US a black is 1.16 times (116%) as likely as a white to be executed for first degree murder. A man is 22 times (2200%) as likely as a woman to be executed for capital murder. We often read about the injustice to blacks compared to whites, though we almost never hear about the far greater injustice to men compared to women.
