Lazy husbands the norm?
posted by D on Sunday February 16, @04:03PM
from the Misandry dept.
The Media WORKING in Seattle writes " As you can see from this link, Dodge has joined the male bashing league with a minivan billboard advertisement that states: "Gets more done than most husbands." Can you imagine the media firestorm and feminist backlash if the word Husbands was replace with Wives? Even better, how about a billboard with an advertisement from Playboy with the statement: "Get more pleasure than with your wife!" YOW! No fewer than (2) of these billboard are within a couple of hundred feet of my workplace. It has several thousand, hard-working husbands who work everyday, year after year, to bring home the cash for their families. What's next for men if this can be put up by a major US corporation?"

I notice by the automobile (minivan) that is depicted in this advertisement that this company is targeting soccer Moms, who have to sleep until 10 or 11, then do a little house work, then grip about it, then pick the kids up from soccer practice.

Life is so rough for the priveleged, stay at home nags that men are married to.

I wonder what Chrysler would say about this. I would imagine that Ray is correct in his assumption that the soccer mom is being targeted. But, I do believe that most soccer mom's are working women as well. The perpetuation of the male of the family as an inept individual is a current theme not only in advertising, but mainstream television as well. When beer commercials use large busted women to get the attention of men, or car manufacturers show women chasing after a guy because of his car, do men mind? I still think that the Constitutional aspects of the family laws in this country are the dividing wedge that sets men and women apart. We all are being deprived of our Constitutional Rights, so why not write our legislatures, change the paradigm, and the advertising companies will follow?

Apparently Chrysler has forgotten who actually PAYS for those minivans in many cases... not particularly intelligent to put a man bashing advertisment in an area where a lot of men will see it. I certainly don't tell my wife what to buy when she's looking for a car, but she would definitely respect my opinion if I had a valid reason to boycott a manufacturer.

Smooth move Chrysler!

Do not by a daimler-chrysler product. Ever. People who make money by belittling you are simply not acceptable vendors until they do PENANCE, not just withdraw the offending ad. You have more power than you think!! But it is with your MONEY not your vote.

Wasn't there a lawsuit against Toyota a while back because of racial stereotyping of black people in commercials they did? I believe it was by a group that Jesse Jackson was affiliated with. I seem to recall that Toyota had to make a number of monetary and other concessions toward Jackson's suit so given we are still in the same society and governed by the same laws, how is this example of sexism toward an identifiable group of people different from that example of racism towards an identifiable group of people?

I have a problem with your current ad campaign for the Dodge Caravan. The ad has a picture of a Caravan and a statement in the uppper left corner saying, "Gets More Done Than The Average Husband." I think this is a very stupid comment and you should consider getting another ad agency. Why does the Chrysler Corporation need to resort to misandric ads to sell their products? Why not be fair and even handed and have a similar ad that says, "Gets More Done Than The Average Air Head Soccer Mom?" I of course will NOT be purchasing your products.

I am sending them my opinion, but it will go beyond the obvious sexism. I find it appalling that as a country on the brink of war we are continuously inundated by the media with pictures/videos of husbands and fathers kissing wives and children good-bye as they depart for the Middle East- possilbly never to return again. So how does Chrysler view this? Our present day soldiers are a bunch of do-nothing lazy bums whose departure is welcomed by their wives and children.
As soon as I finish typing this I'm going to voice this opinion to the editorial boards of both major newspapers in Chicago, the featured writers from both newspapers, the advertising critic for the Chicago Sun-times, my brother and his friends in the United States Air force, and finally John Stossel from ABC's 20/20 because it seems he likes attacking idots like this.

I hear alot of people saying; "The ad is aimed at women."
That is true but why is it that commercials aimed at men are usualy just as anti-man as those aimed at women?
Even the ads that are targeting men show the same formula; MAN= bumbeling idiot who is abused, degraded, humiliated, emasculated and "shown up" by the supirior female.
So, No. I don't buy the whole, 'well, it's sorta okay if men are bashed, because it's an ad aimed at women.' thing.

I can't believe that companies are STILL preying on the underlying prejudices of the american public. I guess I won't be buying Dodge.
