Madonna's New Movie a Change of Pace
posted by Scott on Saturday October 19, @09:55AM
from the media dept.
The Media frank h writes "I found this article on Madonna's new movie "Swept Away," and after I read what the movie is about, it occurred to me that the reason the critics panned the movie so aggressively might be because the female lead, played by Madonna, is made to look weak and dependent on a man, the male lead played by Adriano Giannini, and worse yet, a man below her "station." The film tells the story of an American "rich bitch," who makes life miserable for a lowly Italian crew member of the yacht on which she is cruising the Aegean. But when the couple are accidentally stranded, the Italian "rough trade" sailor forces her to beg for his help to survive until they become lovers. I haven't seen it yet, and I'm not really a movie critic, but it would be interesting to see what the folks here have to say about it. Is it really a bad movie, or is it just that the illiterati don't like the fact that the woman isn't dominant?"

The original "Swept Away" won an Academy Award for Best Director. James Berardinelli (http://movie-reviews.colossus.net/movies.html)has the original on his Top 100 Movies list and calls the Madonna version "unfortunate."

On a different note, relatively hated rapper Eminem is starring in a new film called "8 mile" or "Mile 8" or something like that. The movie appears to be about a young rapper struggling against the odds to win fame and fortune (sort of a Rocky of rap or a Purple Rain of rap). Believe it or not, the trailer for the film includes a scene where Eminem is talking either to his daughter or a very young sister and is made to look like a sympathetic figure... a single male caretaker!

I am curious to find out more about that movie.

I have not seen the show, so my statement is before the facts, but I bet that if the roles were reversed, the media would love it. Expecially if the man were portayed as a bumbling fool.

I think that Madonna is a fantastic actress and singer. I,especially, liked her acting and singing in "Evita."

While 'correct' gender protrayals *may* have had some effect on the reviews of this movie by some reviewers, I think the box office is the final arbiter -- and it's DYING at the box office.

From what I've heard it's an absolute bomb, a dud, a total turkey. There's speculation that Madonna may never act in a feature film again because of this spectacular flop. And it's not exactly doing Guy Ritchie's career any favours, either.

Madonna, never to be in a feature film again?!?
THE HORROR!
Sorry, if there are any Madonna fans out there, But all I can say is, 'Who cares'?

As far as the movie being a "flop", that's all I've been hearing about it too.
However, let us not forget a certain, VERY anti-male, movie called "ENOUGH". You know, the one where Jennifer Lopez plays a "battered" wife, takes the law into her own hands and beats up her "EVIL" husband? Well, alot of (though not all) critics raved about this movie. praiseing it for showing a "strong woman", and all that other happy horse hocky. THAT movie was also very BAD and 'flopped' as well. But I never ONCE heared any one really flame this rabid chick-flick.
The fact of the matter seems to be, that whenever a movie features either an "evil" man or a spineless, groveling, "uncle Tom" of a wussy-poopie man, no matter how BAD that movie is, it will get at least SOME praise.
Conversely, ANY movie featureing any thing other than a "DOMINANT WOMAN" will get FLAMED, whether it is a "good" movie or not.

However, there does seem to be a hint in the air, that a change may be comeing. The "dominant women" thing doesn't get Men into the theaters all that well. (can't imagine why...,) And movie and TV folks seem to be FINALLY getting the message.
The only thing is though, I don't personaly want to see things go in the other direction, I.E. Men beating the hell out of women every 2 seconds, like we see Women beating the hell out of Men every 2 seconds, now.
A spineless, groveling, "uncle Tom" Woman is no better than a spineless, groveling "uncle Tom" Man.

well, now for some depressing news. On an intercontinental flight I was treated to an extended preview of a new Jennifer Lopez film. With an great social consciousness, J. Lo is raising awareness about domestic violence. The film is about husband trying to kill his wife, who escapes with "her" child and learns self-defence to fight off the evil man-husband. In other words, the film sanctimoniously puts forward standard, horrific stereotypes about domestic violence.

Once again, DV as a cover for anti-male hate. Don't buy it.

Anon,
Yeah that's the film I was talking about, "ENOUGH".
I feel VERY SORRY for you haveing to even be subjected to a 'PREVIEW' of that hunk of garbage of a movie. Interesting, that they showed it on an airplane. I guess they know a "captive audience" when they see one.
