Men's Health Steve Imparl's web site devoted to depression in men has received some new material recently worth noting. Included in the updates are a radio interview about depression, several new articles and commentary, a mother's story about her son's suicide, and more. The site also has a moderated bulletin board and an e-mail list for receiving update announcements to the site.

I checked out the web site and sent Steve an email. It is great to know that there are people like him starting to show up more and more.
Through the efforts of people like him lives will be saved.

I asked Steve the same thing I will ask all of you for.

I am looking for statistics on suicide. Forgive me if I'm a little vague about what I'm up to, but I will say that I plan on putting this information to good use in the interest of men in Los Angeles initially. Men commit suicide at a rate that is 4 times higher than that of females, and in Los Angeles it must be even higher. The depression that men experience as a result of their injustices at the hands of a prejudiced and corrupt legal system is a (if not the) major contributing factor.

In Los Angeles (probably other places) there is a phenomenon that has become so well known in police circles that its slang expression has made it into the common vernacular of the average Angeleno. I'm refering to DBC (death by cop). It is the preferred, assisted suicide of choice among down and out men everywhere in the city. I would like to get statistics on police shootings, but LAPD and other law enforcement agencies are notorious for their stonewalling when it comes to uncomplimentary information about them.

Would this be something to contact the media about for info, and if so who? I'm a little green at this, but a point in the right direction and I'm on my way with dogged determination. I am really insensed at the blatant disrespect that has been shown to the civil and human rights of men for so long, and hope to start making an impact on that outrage.

I doubt you'll get much help from the MEDIA, Anon.
'fact of the matter is they do their dead level best to SUPRESS information of this kind.
ANYTHING that would HELP men is supressed.

Ray,

You might go seek a face to face with the leadership of the local Policemen's Benevolent Association and take them into your confidence and describe exactly what you are up to. The PBA themselves cannot give you access to reconrds, but this might well ease your way in the more official channels. While we like to think of cops as siding with the feminists, the reality is that it's the "system," their management, that is feminist-oriented and not the beat cops. Many of them suffer from the same issues that the rest of us do, and as I understand it, the rate of divorce among cops is higher than the rest of the population, owing to the stress of the job.

Hello.

I am grateful for the support of the MANN community for my site. It is still in a very early stage of development. However, Scott has been incredibly enthusiastic in his efforts to get the word out. I am excited that MANN and several other sites now link to MaleDepression.com. I am learning as I go, and I am adding a lot of new features and content to the site.

The site has already been a success. When I began the MaleDepression.com page, I defined my criterion for success as: If this site helps just one man, other than me, with this illness, then I shall consider it a success. A couple of days ago, I got an unsolicited contact from an men's activist whom I respect a lot. He thanked me for creating the site and told me it had already helped him. Success achieved! [punching the air] :-)

I won't get complacent, though. I know I can do much more with the site. Thanks, guys, for your enthusiasm and support for this project.

Metta,

Steve Imparl
