Few Men in College, Women Suffer
posted by Scott on Wednesday April 03, @01:22PM
from the inequality/double-standards dept.
Inequality shawn writes "This article is about the shortage of men in college. In particular, it discusses the disparity between the number of black men and black women on campus. Of course, the article isn't about the obstacles and issues that prevent African American and other men from obtaining a higher education. No. It seems that women are the real victims of this educational shortfall because they can't find enough men to date. This article is interesting because: 1) it illustrates how the news media exclusively focuses on women even when it's clear that men are the ones with the problem; 2) it's another indication that women are reluctant to consider less educated men who do not have good jobs."

Interesting commentary in this article:

“That makes things tough on black female college students and graduates who are looking for a mate with those of a similar educational background, says Robert Billingham, an associate professor of human development at Indiana University.” [more ‘twisted sister’ logic?]

More women going to college than men, and it makes it tough for the women?

Then a large part of the article by Megan Scott of The Associated Press, focuses upon how this vast majority of women, with few men to go around, are taken advantage of sexually.

Seem to recall elsewhere, I have read commentary about the changing trend, from the older one of the young wife helping her hubby thru school, to the new one of the hubby putting his wife thru school.

In the remainder of the article cited here, the problem seems to be 1) finding a privileged male; 2) suffering the advantage of her majority; 3) most men need education (& no doubt pay their own way); or 4) too many men are either working or in prison.

Yep. Ya it really sucks for those Russian women that all those men were brutally murdered in war fighting over something they didnt care about with someone they didnt know. Poor girls. I tell you what they can all come over here I'll fix them up personally.
That reminds me of the women being raped in Afghanistan. I think if women here knew what they were doing the Afghanistan men they would think rape was a picnic. Somebodies got there priorities a little messed up, because I know I would choose rape over being mutilated with extreme predjuduce. Certainly not women. Nice to know that even though the women in Afghanistan were not allowed to have any power they're still allowed to be raped in large numbers but I guess they're the lucky ones who didn't die in agony during childbirth while the country was being run by these "protective" men. Sickening.

What women don't understand about war is that they are catagorically accessories after the fact. Its all fine and dandy for Jane Fonda to go over to see P.O.W.s and tell them they were bad little boys, when she never had the threat of being drafted. Many, many wars are fought simply over natural resources, which women need and demand from their mates. So instead of critizing the methods of which survival is obtained why don't you give us a solution as to who gets the oil and stops fanatics from killing us because we never heard of some god who rewards them for killing us. Your point?
Looks like the "men and women are classes" fallacy. Hint: when you're killed, maimed or tortured, the sex of the killer/perpetrator does not matter. I'd still rather be raped (by a man or woman) than killed (by a man or a woman).

Same logic with the Titanic after it went down. To receive the clean-up operations of the Titanic, meaning people dead & alive... a dock in NYC was assigned for arriving baggage. The women rescued off the ship arrived much earlier then the men who were most already disposed up.

So all the women were lined up on the dock. Hence the name Christened to the dock then, Widows' Dock or Widows' Row.

I suppose the surviors & the living suffer most. Especially then, those times the weeping. Because who else put the women in the lifeboats first? The ones who mostly died. The same ones then, who made the paycheck. The loss of permanent paycheck is truly worth a real cry.

Isnt this the same mentality that Warren Ferrel talked about in his book?????
Men are not able to go to college women are still victims. Victim , victim, victim. Megan is the victim of her own hallucinations. How can these people claim victimhood of their own demise, where the black woman has been promoted into every area for her best interest, maybe she out smarted her self by buying into all the crap Politicians have been selling her for the last 10 years or so.

I'm not particularly - I hear so much about how women should be going to college, it's not nearly as important if men go to college. The prevailing message is still that of women are neglected in education and the job market, and young women these days need to fight to get an education and a good job - a few might of noticed it really isn't that difficult. Their fight is misdirected and they don't want to acknowledge it.

I actually feel badly for the black women. This has been a problem for years and it's very understandable why a college-educated person would require a partner to be college-educated.

I see few black woman-white man couples and I don't know if it's due to black women's not wanting to be with white men or white men's not being physically attracted to black women, or both.

However, the percentages of white men and women are about equal on the campuses and the white women are doing just fine. If the ratios shifted and white women started to outnumber white men I would think back to all of those women who were so very choosy in rejecting me back in my dating years and laugh my ass off.

I agree completely. I know many men who will not even consider dating a woman who does not have a college degree and an established career. Most men don't want to be stuck supporting a woman who doesn't work or makes minimum wage. If we all agree this is perfectly understandable, we should also agree that a woman not wanting to be stuck supporting a man who doesn't work or who makes minimum wage is just as understandable. If you find the idea of supporting another person awful, why do you think someone else will think it's great?
