Raising Money to Publicize Warren Farrell's Latest Book

News Marc Angelucci writes "I am passing this message on from Larry Hellmann of the National Congress for Fathers and Children. He is trying to raise some money to publicize Father & Child Reunion. Given the cowardly lies that gender feminists have been spreading about Warren to effectively shut him up, I think this is a worthwhile effort and I will contribute a couple hundred to it." If there is a thread of unification among us in the National Congress for Fathers and Children, it is our unique awareness of the tears, the fears, the despair of fathers sitting we meet daily pouring out their souls stripped of their very reason for being because their family has been destroyed, their children have been stolen from them, their support has been reduced to money. We have seen a loving dads transformed into criminals of society by child support orders they cannot maintain. We have seen fathers become walking dead because they are being denied merely to be what they are: fathers. We have all seen some version of what haunts my mind: a Father shot and killed in front of his children as he tried to implement his child visitation orders. If I am preaching to the choir it is because the voices of our choir have often not only gone unheard but, worse, been rejected and derided.

One of the most important events in recent years in the advance of Fatherhood information is the publication of Warren Farrell's latest book Father and Child Reunion (2001). Its combination of readability, balance and documentation makes it the best single resource to help a judge, the legislature make the transition from "mother knows best" to "both parents are best".

I am personally aware of Warren's work on this book from 1992 - ten years ago. I am personally aware of Warren's willingness to give up the world's best publisher (Simon & Schuster) and a hefty advance rather than cave to their demands to drop out the material on the dangers of father-absence and why children with dads do so well. The result is a book that ultimately got published but with a bank account that got wiped-out.

This Father's Day is our last opportunity to get out to the media the voice of our choir: the message of Father and Child Reunion. As President of NCFC, I have made a commitment with a publicist who guarantees radio show appearances for Warren Farrell to promote Father and Child Reunion and the work of NCFC specifically in the top twenty five markets, and in syndicated shows. The first commitment came from the publicist: reducing the fee from $7500 to $5500.

Tarcher Putnam, the publisher, has also committed to another printing of the book if this printing sells out. Our commitment is the $5,500.00. This is something we can do. We can help make the difference we want to make. It is my personal promise that every cent raised will go 100% into the project. Not a dime will be spent on administration. I further promise that for every $100.00 contribution or more, I will send an autographed copy (by Warren, not me!) of Father and Child Reunion to either for the donor or his/her Father.

In order to set up the project and gear up to the effort the publicist is asking for a 50% deposit by March 19.

We can do this. We can make it worthwhile for publishers to publish our message and impossible for the media to ignore what is published. Let's do it. Please make out your check to: National Congress for Fathers and Children and note the check to the Father's Day Project

It seems to me like *part* of the problem may be the high fee/honorarium Warren requires, even after the stated reduction.

I think Warren's writing is wonderful, and I know he's gotta make enough to cover his bills, but I can't imagine every time Patty Ireland or Kim Gandy make an appearance somewhere that they command $7000 or even $5500. If they do, well, I've been wrong before and probably will be again.

The $5,500 is what the public relations person is charging, not Warren.

I'd need to know more before donating. For example, who's paying for the trip? Not all radio programs work with phone interviews, so WF may need to travel. Is this *only* radio gigs, or are there TV appearances as well, and on what shows? Is the publicist intending to issue press releases as well for the print media?

How many cities? Is there the option for a satellite 'tour'? Is that included in the $5500?

Otherwise, all that money is paying for is for the PR guy to make some phone calls to get an established author some interviews. (BTW--authors do not get paid for publicity appearances. Speaking engagements are something else. On a promo tour, the author or publisher pays expenses. These days very few publishers will fork over the $$)

I dunno, but without knowing more it sounds like NCFC is being taken for a ride.

I am suprised by Schuett's suspicions. Maybe I'm just too trusting. I read this appeal as a chance to make a difference. Anyway, I sure hope so, because I already mailed my check.

I've got 10 years experience in publicity and am training the authors with cyberManbooks.com to promote themselves. This whole situation sounds wrong to me.

Trudy,

Thanks for the input Trudy. If you have a moment, will you please contact Larry Hellmann at ncfc@primenet.com or Warren at wfarrel@cox.net and ask some of the questions you posted here? Warren and Larry told Glenn Sacks and myself over dinner that they felt this was a good deal and that it would guarantee at least 25 radio interviews for Warren in the "top 25 markets" between May 1st and Father's Day. I'm just a messenger for this and I don't understand the publicity industry (i.e., are "markets" cities, radio shows, etc?). Maybe there's something Larry and Warren are not aware of? Your input is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for passing this on, Marc. I just sent in my check. It is a worthwhile effort.

While I understand the concerns voiced by some people here, I'm still a little disappointed. This isn't a get rich internet scheme. The individuals and organizations involved are of the highest integrity. This is an opportunity to actually do something positive.
