Thanks for Such a Great Year!

Announcements As the founder of Mensactivism.org, I'd like to take a few moments to thank the people who have made this site such a success this year, and more than I ever expected it to be. Click Read More below to read some notes on the history of MANN, the people who have brought us to our current point, and the top five comment posters. Let the good times roll...

When it all started....

Most people don't know that when I started MANN in May of 2000, I was almost certain that it was going to be a flop, and I thought of it mainly as an exercise in learning some web and database administration skills. I figured I would maintain interest in it for no more than six months at the most. But I was definitely wrong - an entire user community sprung up around this site and has kept it going the whole time. Since then I've suffered through network outages, a web server port block from my ISP during the "Code Red" worm crisis, hundreds of attempted break-ins, and many lost hours of sleep queuing news stories and customizing the site's interface (anyone remember when logged in users would get a message like "This page was generated by a team of stealth ninjas" at the top of the main page?). I've also had a blast while doing all of this, and the effort has always been more than worthwhile.

This site is only here because you are.

One of the reasons why Mensactivism.org is different from other web sites is that it is almost completely user-driven. Users send in news stories. Users write editorials. Users participate in the on-line chats. Users post comments and agree, debate, troll (!), and inform one another. Somehow this web engine has combined the features of an e-mail list, web message board, and portal site in a way that appeals to you folks, and keeps you coming back. You are the most important part of this site, and if you've contributed content in any form to it, it's just as much the result of your efforts as it is of myself and the other admins.

I would like to thank everyone who visits this site regularly, who posts productive comments, who submits news stories, who has written an original article that has been posted here, has made a financial donation to the site, or any combination of the above. Each of you is living proof that the efforts of an individual can have a significant impact, and you have helped shape the direction of this site and even the men's movement itself.

Admins keep this site running smoothly...

A very special thanks to James Hanback (aka Nightmist) and Adam Hartney, "Adam," who have made a special dedication of their time to help ensure Mensactivism.org is updated frequently with the best selection of user submissions available, for helping to reduce the impact of trolls and divisive infighting, and sharing the workload of maintaining the content of MANN.

Nightmist has devoted an immense amount of time to MANN, was the stimulus for our relationship with Wendy McElroy and iFeminists.com, and on top of that posts more comments here than I do!

Adam, too has posted dozens of articles here, and written a couple of his own. As our only Admin from the UK, Adam's input is very useful and a great help to us.

Thomas will be coming on board as an admin starting very soon, and I'd like to thank him for offering his help to us.

Brad isn't an admin, but he did send us some nice graphics for our news topics. Likewise, Tom Parker spruced up our main banner logo.

Thanks guys!

The Top Five Commentors

The following is a list of the top five MANN comment posters to date. I originally wanted to list the top five news submitters, but the database apparently doesn't keep track of the number of stories submitted, though it does keep track of the number of comments. One person, by far, posted the greatest number of comments on MANN. Anonymous User led the pack by a wide margin with more than 107,000 posts. What a dedicated guy! Ok, seriously though, here are the others:

  1. Thomas
  2. frank h
  3. BusterB
  4. Claire4Liberty
  5. Hawth

(I've excluded Nightmist from the list since he's an admin, though he would have taken the #1 spot here if I had included him)

While the quantity of posts doesn't mean everything, these people are undoubtably familiar names to most readers, and I'd like to thank them for being such active participants on our comment boards.

I'm a bit uncomfortable singling people out here because there are so many others that deserve praise too. You know who you are, and again, I thank you for your efforts. It has been a wonderful year. Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for everything you've done.

Sincerely,

Scott Garman
Founder and Site Admin

PS - Happy New Year!

Thank you for all of your efforts, Scott. You are a mover and shaker in the egalitarian movement. All of your work is deeply appreciated. Because of you, and many others whom I could only begin to list, the world is becoming a better place.

Whatever "blessings" may be to you, I hope you have many of them.

Thanks from Germany as well! Do not forget that your efforts are taken up by menīs rights activists in other countries as well. You create a lot of resonance you often donīt even know about. For example some of the news collected by you and other activists went into a book-publication and a bi-weekly e-zine of mine which is in turn read by probably between 1000 and 2000 people. As Germany is lagging about 5 to 10 years behind the US when it comes to Menīs Rights, these publications are already causing a lot of stir.

Scott, when I first found this site (while I was researching an article for the Nashville Scene on men's Web sites, I never dreamed I would become an active part of it. I'm happy to have helped, and, honestly, I'm glad someone like you was here to launch it.

You remain the constant voice of reason here, and your sacrifice of time and energy to keep this place running smoothly is an inspiration. Without MANN, I think our success stories would be much fewer and farther between.

Happy New Year, man.

What the heck! I will thank others, who have contributed to the egalitarian movement, and I'd love to hear of those I've missed. (I'll only refer here to those whose work I know personally.)

Very special thanks to Nightmist and Adam as well as Brad and Tom Parker for their contributions to this site. Also, a sincere expression of gratitude to Warren Farrell and Asa Baber for their continuing efforts and to the women who are so devoted to truth, justice and plain, simple decency: Wendy McElroy, Cathy Young, Christina Hoff Sommers, Daphne Patai and Donna Laframboise. Thanks to the women and men at the Independant Women's Forum. And, though he has written is a somewhat lighter vein, I'd like to thank Garrison Keillor for his "Complete Book of Guys." I might not agree with everything that these people say, but they are clearly devoted to advancing the cause of equality.

Let's keep up the good work and celebrate ourselves and each other for our efforts and continuing successes.

I haven't posted in a little while, either. I sincerely apologize for my absence. The holiday season (and lots of overtime at work, with people taking their Christmas vacations) had me busy! Also - and I'm ashamed to admit it - I really wanted to enjoy the holidays, and sometimes the things I read here get me down.

But, as I can see, there was cause for celebration around here, as well. Sorry I wasn't a part of it. But, I may soon be adding my two cents to certain threads I missed out on that haven't gone into archive yet - even though I'm not sure who will see them now.

Also, I'm hoping that I can make good on my New Year's resolution - to write the novel I've been developing in recent months. Let's just say it's very heavy on the themes we commonly discuss at this forum! Believe me - if it gets written and published, you all will be the first to know!

But, for now, I feel very honored (and touched!) to be part of "the list". I can honestly say that the MANN experience has been nothing but invigorating, educational and therapeutic for me. God bless all of you guys (and girls!) whom I now consider "family", in a sense. I promise to begin making up for lost time, posthaste.

Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year to everyone! Here's hoping the next one will be just as good, if not better!

Scott- thanks for the incredible work you've done on MANN. It think it's a no-brainer to say that this site has galvanized the Men's Movement in a way that's never happened before. MANN is the foundation on which Men's News Daily and a dozen other sites have been built to take back something that's been lost since the dawn of Feminism. Thanks to Scott, the admins, and all others who have contributed so much. This is incredibly important work. I think we will make a difference for millions of men and women, whether they are ever directly aware of us or not.

Had there been anything like this in the 70's and 80's when my sibs and I were growing up in a gender feminist family it would have made a lot of difference in our lives. All of us in my
family, both the boys and the girls, were badly harmed by the misandrist bigotry that our parents taught us.

Bit by bit we can change that scenario. Good luck to Mensactivism, to our allies, and to each of us in 2002.

I want to thank Scott and all who administer this site for: 1) giving me a comfortable place to complain a little bit about how men are being treated; 2) making me feel a part of a community that, even though it is spread out over the nation and the world, carries a closeness that I cherish; 3) imprinting gender politics with testosterone in a way that makes it increasingly difficult for the radical feminists to ignore.

I wish all of the men and women that visit this site a warm and propserous New Year.
