News John May sent in this chat transcript from CNN where gender feminist leader Gloria Steinem is interviewed. The main topic of the discussion is women's rights in Afghanistan, but it's always a good idea to keep tabs on what Steinem is up to.

I'm in such a tizzy reading this chat discussion that I can hardly figure out what to say about it. But I'll pull myself together and say this: Gloria Steinem, if feeling so compelled to help Afghani women, should go help them herself! No one on this planet, man or woman, is stopping her from getting her hands dirty and helping the "peace-loving women" of Afghanistan. I get tired of listening to ranting women's rights activist screaming about the problem not doing anything besides whining about the men in our government stopping the women from doing anything productive. I'm going to stop here before I end up getting too overworked and say something I'll regret later.

Be strong and of good courage.

She must be doing the rounds. I’ve just read another chat transcript with her at http://www.msmagazine.com/gloriachat.html

One thing bothered me greatly about this Ms mag transcript. In response to a question about violence against women, she replies: “And as far as violence against women, you can look at the Nike commercial for the Olympics, where a woman is being chased by a murderer, I don't think they would have done that racially. But why can't women save themselves when they are in jeopardy, why is it always a male hero to save them? The politics are definitely there. We need to write to the producers, the sponsors, who are usually sensitive to these things, in this case, write to Nike and tell them you are not buying their products until they stop doing commercials like this.”

I’ve not seen this ad – I suspect it only ran in the US – however surely warning bells should be ringing for us when we read statements like this? A major sportswear manufacturer demonises men yet again as potential murderers, and the feminists prefer to claim that women are worse off from this portrayal?

I’m not sure whether some male rescues the female athlete and this is what Steinem objects to, or whether she’s claiming it encourages violence against women. Either way, I’m sure Nike will or did receive letters like she suggested which must leave them in a quandary. They’ve just shown a negative portrayal of the male and the feminists complain. What’s the solution? Probably a further, more extreme anti male/pro female advert.

It just goes to show how absolutely essential our letter writing activities are. We must strongly present and protest our views where appropriate as equally valid potential consumers of products and services.. It makes me wonder whether companies like Montauk receive complaints from feminists that the anti-male sofa advert they recently ran was somehow anti female. Of course (big caveat) – I’ve not seen the ad – maybe there was a message in it that most women would be offended by. Can any Americans enlighten me more about it?

I believe the ad featured a woman running from a chainsaw murderer through the woods. I don't think any man saved her, she outran the guy, and at the end it was revealed that she had Nike running shoes on (ie, the shoes gave her the edge she needed to escape).

So I have no idea where the concept that a man had to rescue her came about, unless they are suggesting that by designing or marketing the shoes, the men at Nike saved her (and I'm sure Nike isn't entirely male either, which still doesn't explain Steinem's comment).

It's been a while since I saw the ad, which was featured on a news web site because of the controversy.

That's just Steinem trying to turn women into victims again. There's nothing wrong with that kind of commercial, either for men or for women, in my opinion. That kind of thing happens in horror movies all the time, and it's not just women running from the chainsaw murderer (I haven't seen the commercial, but it sounds like a spoof of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," in which one of the female main characters gets away from Leatherface and attempts to escape through the woods.)

Granted, the commercial could probably have been less offensive by making both the perp and the victim the same sex.

RE: Male bashing adverts

Just a quick response;
We have quite a few misandric adverts here in the UK, and I make a point of writing or emailing the offending company as often as possible to complain. I also believe this approach
has had some success.

I think we are begining to make an impact brothers

Gloria should run for President of Afganistan. It would be a good way for her to put her money where her mouth is and to stop having her put OUR money where her mouth is.

ROFL I doubt she'd do it.

Someone needs to tell Gloria that not all women are pacifists. I'm sure as hell not! I firmly believe war and violence are part of human nature, and, as much as we'd like to stop it, we can't. We don't need any more rhetoric about women being victims. If they're not victims anymore b/c of social change, the gender feminists will still hang on to their life preserver of victimhood and blame their quixotic [i.e., they're making giants out of windmills] status on MEN. Bad thing, fellas....
"Female men's activist" is not an oxymoron.
