Finding Non-Profits that Help Men
posted by Scott on Saturday November 10, @06:13PM

Men's Organizations plumber writes "The list of charitable organizations in the charitable giving campaign for federal workers illustrates distorted priorities for sex equity in the US today. The list includes a large number of organizations promoting reproductive rights for women...[but] no organizations addressing men's reproductive rights. The list includes a large number of organizations addressing women's health...[but] just one organization with a focus on men's health, the Prostate Cancer Research Institute. The list includes a number of organizations addressing domestic violence. While some of the entries refer to men or partners, others assume that only women are victims of domestic violence. What are some good 501(c)(3) organizations that care about the...problems of males? What can be done to encourage charitable donations to men's organizations?"

I worked for United Way in my community and my husband now works at a Marine Corps facility. Both of us discourage any Federal Employee from contributing to the Combined Federal Campaign. Servicemen are particularly feeling the squeeze from divorce laws that shut them out of their families and leave them with little or nothing to call a life.

At this point all that can be done to shift donations to other orgs is to encourage those you know NOT to contribute! Find a good org in your local area or online and promote them as much as possible. How about mensactivism.org, for starters?

Good, helping orgs are not always 501(c)3. There are thousands of effective, legitimate orgs who can't afford the cost of applying for a 501(c)3, yet function anyway. No, you can't deduct these donations from your taxes, but at least you'll know your money didn't pay for a new Mercedes for an employee, or for the brainwashing of yet another 'battered' woman so she'll learn to depend on the feminist shelter to solve all her 'problems.'

The list includes a large number of organizations promoting reproductive rights for women...[but] no organizations addressing men's reproductive rights.

The U.S. based National Center for Men is running an extensive project to legally protect men's reproductive rights. See www.choiceformen.com.

Stop Abuse For Everyone (SAFE) is another one that people might consider. We are very outspoken about male victims of domestic violence. The director is Philip Cook, who wrote "Abused Men." SAFE is at http://www.safe4all.org.

THX for reminding me, Marc!
SAFE is also in specific need of volunteers to write grant proposals. This is something that can be done by somebody with no money!

I'm working up a list of orgs that have needs in addition to cash donations. I'll put this up on my website as a regular feature. New upstart orgs are especially welcome!
