An Interview With Andrea Dworkin
posted by Scott on Thursday November 01, @01:24PM
from the news dept.
News nagzi submitted this link which is a RealAudio interview with Andrea Dworkin on a free speech radio program. As you would expect, Dworkin gets tripped up a bit when talking about pornography to the host, who in general otherwise seems supportive of Dworkin's work. I'm including this interview because it's instructive to know what we're up against - Dworkin has lost a lot of influence over the years, but she still represents one of the most radical, anti-male forms of feminism we've seen to date. Take note of the techniques she uses to make her points and study them.

Alternative to the audio

If you're unable to download the audio, but you still want to get a taste of Andrea, here's a link to a speech she once gave at a men's movement function. I believe this was back in the early 80's. I warn you - it's brutal. Dworkin's take on matters is blacker than pitch, to say the least. And, unfortunately, she's intelligent and eloquent enough to make her words believable to the naive listener/reader. Proceed with caution.

If you've ever read any of Hitler's rants about how horribly the German people were (supposedly) oppressed by the Jews, you will see remarkable similarities to what Dworkin says about how women are (supposedly) oppressed by men.

Dworkin, MacKinnon and their ilk are as deranged, hateful, evil and dangerous as were Hitler and his cronies. Believe in our cause; these monsters must be stopped.
People actually listen to her?

Andrea Dworkin sounds like a neurotic puritanical
fruitloop.

She states that all intercourse is oppressive, women don't like intercourse... women have offered new ways of intercourse over the centuries and men have rejected these ideas.... seven out of ten women can't have an orgasm through sex (I must admit, my own field studies clearly dictate otherwise)

Her statements about men getting paid more than men have been proven to be false.

Her statement about being men being able to comment openly about sexuality is bizarre. Has she even set foot in a corporation lately? The witch hunt mentality of "harassment laws" disproves her comments about men's freedom that women don't have to be entirely false.

She compares pornography to lynchings. Every statement is supported with hyperbolic scenerios. Also she is SUE happy. Everyman and company should be sued (I hate to say it, but her sick vision has become true on many fronts)

I find it funny how she thinks her own radical/neurotic feelings reflect that of all women.

A long time ago, wasn't there a news piece posted to this site about how Dworkin was on a rampage against porn shops? I did a search through the archives but I couldn't turn anything up. The piece was (ahem) interesting in that it cited Dworkin's opinions on gay sex; she thinks that even gay male sex is oppressive to women (in effigy) if it involves penetration - and so, too, is lesbian sex that imitates penetration. (And Dworkin has the nerve to call the patriarchy "homophobic"; she, herself, is a lesbian.)

Remember, too - this is a woman whom Gloria Steinem, the matron saint of modern feminism, is quoted as deeming "a great thinker" (or something like that). Interesting.

I find it hard to believe that anyone of sound body and mind could embrace this garbage. This woman may be well-educated and articulate, but she is clearly mentally disturbed.

I can only think of one person that had similar characteristics, and that's Valerie Solanas. She, as most know, acted out the evil in her hatred towards men, where Dworkin spreads the hate like the virus she is. Dwarkin is far more dangerous then any Solanas

I believe the quote you are looking for is:

"In every century, there are a handful of writers who help the human race to evolve. Andrea is one of them" Gloria Steinem.

A couple of interesting facts...

1. Andrea Dworkin did indeed go on an anti-pornography campaign, one of the casualities being the Fauste Theatre in St. Paul. This was simply a theatre which played porn yet Andrea claimed it was the cause of all the drug and prostitution problems in neighborhoods a few blocks away. The owner argued that there were sex shops and pornography outfits closer to those places and even if pornography did cause those problems his theatre was not the logical target. He wasn't able to stand up to her political bullying and so at Andrea's "request" the theatre was torn down. That was over 20 years ago, the drugs and prostitution remain. Andrea has shown no further interest in the nearby neighborhood.

2. Rumor has it Andrea and Solanas knew each other. I read an article once written by a man who used to be a feminist that attended a lecture where both Andrea and Valerie were speakers. It wouldn't suprise me at all to learn that they were good friends.

That aside I listened to about 5 minutes of that interview before turning it off. I don't think this is a case all that worthy of study, I've seen feminists who can debate a lot better then that. She sounded bad even when being interviewed by one of her biggest fans! Personally, I think the best weapons to bring into a debate are plenty of knowledge, memorized prepared answered, planned logical traps, and a good awareness of debating tricks like shifting the burden of proof, diverting from the main issue, knowledge of the other's hot buttons, etc. A thorough understanding of logic is helpful too but unfortunately very few people have it, and fewer still are willing to let you explain the intricacies of logic before telling them your view.
