Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty for Yates

News Although the Men's Activism News Network is attempting to restrain from posting too many Andrea Yates stories (Texas mother who drowned her five children), the latest news in this case is too important to the men's movement not to post. According to this AP story on Excite News, prosecutors in the Yates case will, indeed, seek the death penalty. Whether you are pro- or anti-death penalty, this news is important because it demonstrates that these Texas prosecutors are willing to pursue sentencing for a woman just the same as they would a man.

Equality in Death (Score:1)

I am for the most part, anti-death penalty. My biggest problem with the death penalty is our "Income" based justice system. Those who can not afford the best legal representation are most likely to get stiffer penalties or a conviction when they are not guilty.

In the case of Mrs. Yates as for the majority of woman killers (especially those who kill children) I'm willing to compromise. Why? Equality. Woman convicted of murder serve only one quarter of the time men serve and in far to many cases, no time at all. There are whole organizations that are focused purely on getting woman out of jail early, particularly, woman who kill their husbands. Guilty or not, they use the often false "Battered Woman Syndrome" to get the guilty person a lighter sentence or freed from prison all together.

Until such time as woman achieve equality in Sentencing, I will support the death penalty only for women.
