Boy Dies at AZ "Reform" Camp

Boys/Young Men Ken sent me a few articles about a boy who died while attending a reform school/camp for troubled youths. These camps are often harshly physically abusive to children in an attempt to scare them out of their antisocial behavior. And of course, these camps are populated almost exclusively by boys, something not pointed out in any of these articles. A story from the New York Times (free registration required to read) can be read here, and there are two other articles from the Arizona Republic, article1 and article2.

Discipline, or lack of it (Score:2)

I have always believed that there is a place for discipline during childhood. Shuffling kids off to "boot camps" where they may get killed, or allowing prison guards to strip search and humiliate them in front of classmates (as we read about a couple of months ago), isn't discipline. It's abuse.

And, yes, boys are going to get the brunt of it, for the exact same reasons boys are in such trouble in education today: they're more physical and energetic... they're not girls.
